Question Explorer XLT questions

I have a 2001 Explorer XLT and I am in need of some new shocks and tires. I have over 46000 miles on it right now. They are all highway miles, no off-roading at all. I am experiencing the problem of a bouncy, bottoming-out ride. I have been following a couple of threads about replacing the shocks with monroe reflex shocks and other tires, specifically Yokohama and Michelin. Can someone please provide the size/model for both the Yokohama and Michelin tires? Also, would Bilstein shocks fit the bill better for the ride that I am going for?

Explorer XLT questions

You will find many threads where we have discussed this, and there are many different ways you can go. The Bilsteins are good shocks, but they are designed as more of a 'performance' shock. The Monroe shocks are the popular choice of people who leave their Explorers at normal ride height and disposition. I think you would enjoy them better (not to mention the pricetag) over the Bilsteins.

As far as tires, I recommend the Michelin SUV - I think the 15" size you are looking for is 235/70/15 or 235/5/15. Maybe someone can chime in a correct me if I am wrong - its been a while since I had the factory wheels on .

Welcome to FTE by the way!!! Feel free to ask away and join in! There are a lot of great and knowledgeable people here!!!

I replaced mine with Michelin LTX M/S, 235/75-15, which were the same as the original Firestone tires, but as I understand the size was an optional upgrade over standard 225/70-15. I also use mine mainly on the highway. This tire had a nice all season tread, with a little bite when needed. I've put close to 30,000 miles on them, with little wear, and even wear. I'm actually in the market for shocks myself, so I can't help you with that one.

Thumbs up Explorer XLT questions

Thanks to all! I will say that I am going to be asking alot of questions. My wife and I have decided that we are jumping into this with both feet. She wants to keep the Explorer so we will be doing alot of upgrading and custom stuff. I'll keep ya'll posted. (NO pun intended there).
If anyone else has any thoughts about the tires and shocks please don't hesitate to post. Thanks again.

I would go with the Monroe's for shocks and a set of 31x10.5R15 Bridgestone Dueller ATs for tires.

Explorer XLT questions

I just saw your post and would like to give you my opinion. I put Monroe Reflex shocks and Good Year "Fortera" 235/75/15's on the factory rims. It has completely changed the way the truck handles and rides on pavement. Just my .02 cents.

Just thought I should let everyone know how things are going.
We put the Monroe Reflex shocks on and WOW, what a difference in the ride. We are still debating on what tires to get. I like the Michelins but I did take a look at the Bridgestone Duellers. I liked them a lot. Haven't decided yet. We'll keep ya'll posted. Thanks to everyone for your comments.

I have Goodyear Wranglers on mine and I'm thoroughly pleased with them. Plus they're American made! By an American company!
