Alternator issue

Still troubleshooting this DB electrical alternator. When I unplug the bigger switch on the back side it stops making this grinding noise from the inside. Won't charge either way. Called Ford today they want 223.00 for a new one. Should I get the one with the biggest current?

if you go with the larger alternator like whats on an ambulance. I am almost positive you will have to also buy the high amp alternator wiring also. I dont think the 2 alternators are interchangeable wiring wise.

if you do install the high amp alternator, you should keep track of everything you do. take some pics. and post it up here so others could benefit.

Since you are going to replace it anyway pull the regulator off the back of it and take a peak inside. Should be 4 bolts on the back of the regulator holding it in, remove those and wiggle the assembly out. With it out you can see if the brushes are worn (2 of them) and also view the slip rings the brushes ride on. Below is a picture of my slip rings that were worn so I had to replace the entire alternator. If just the brushes are worn those are available at the parts store as is just the regulator. Think I spent $120 for re manufactured 'FORD" alternator, same one as I removed.
