my truck needs a new alternator. all my local parts houses have a listing for 60, 75, and 80 amp alternators but nobody actually stocks the 80 amp one. can i put in the 75 amp without problems? my truck has all the electrical options and a subwoofer. i dont know how many amps the old alt is.
I don't know if you can do the 3G alt on the 300-6 or not. Look around and see. That will be a 150a alt.
Or just look at the wiring of each alt. usually though between a 65 and 75 they put a smaller pulley and it's the same alt. sorta quick heck is for on the older style alts stamped original rating on the housing.
I bought a 100a on eBay for 60$ shipped. Same frame and wire plug.
You can do a 3G swap on the 300. You need the 8.25" ear spacing alternator. They are found in some 90, any 91-92, and any 93-95 3.8 Taurus. The do require a slightly changed mounting position, but still use the factory bracket. Here is how its mounted:

Here is a good start on putting a 130A alt on your I 6 300

Actually here is one where everyone in this thread has posted. Also this is at the top in Tech Tips for this very forum. ALOT of great info in there. I would suggest reading through this link and all the links posted in it.

Octaneforce, I think you'll see that most of us who are feeding you advice on the 3G upgrade have done this at least once +++ ... It's not that it is that hard ... it's just that popular and common of an upgrade to our trucks ... read on my friend we gotcha covered !!! Dave
You are earing the best advice here man I had 3 75 amp alternators burst into flames before I did it and couldn't be happier now. In fact I bet if you have the 75 you occasionally on a hot day smell something like an electrical fire but can't find it and if you look real close at the charge connector on your 75 I'll bet a case of beer it looks burnt. Do the upgrade for peace of mind.
thanks for all the advice about the upgrade. ill definitely be looking into it, however i just put a cheap 75 amp alternator in for now because i was so desperate to get the truck going. its so easy to pop the alt in and out so i dont mind experimenting.
