Unhappy Help With Electrical Short

1990 E-150 Electrical Short

Traced My Electrical Short To Fusible Link Wire On The Starter Solenoid. I Understand That Is The Alternator Wire.

First Is That True?

Second If The Alternator Is Putting Out 13.5 Volts How Can That Wire Be Shorted?

fuseable links are shorts. the alternator is working. however, if you have a short in the diode stack you might be having the battery drain back thru the alternator.

BTW,,,what is the problem? draining battery?

yes, battery draining overnight.

placed a test light between neg. battery cable and neg. battery post. the light lit up.

i pulled each fuse individually looking for the shorted circuit and none of them caused the light to go out.

that told me it had to be a circuit that was wired direct to the battery.

i started with the two wires connected to the hot side of the solenoid and when i disconnected the one going to the alternator the light went out for the first time. that is why i thought the short had to be either that wire or the alternator.

i will accept any help i can get it is driving me crazy.

Well, you are exactly ontrack. Perfect troubleshooting. Yank the connectors at the alternator and see if the light goes out again.

if yes, then replace the alternator. 14 years of service is a long time. It culd be brushes or the regulator or the diode stack.

If no, then its in the harness. carefully follow the wire looking for a cut or a place the wire is contacting ground.

Disconected Wire From Alternator And Did A Continuity Check On It And It Was Good. So My Next Move Is To Take The Alternator To Advance Auto Parts And Let Them Check It But It Sure Looks Like The Culprit At This Point. Thanks For Your Help Thus Far. Mustang5.0
