Tranny cooling question

I have been pouring over all the search threads about tranny cooling but I still have some unanswered questions.

First off I have a 2000 EX V10 4x4 with 147k on it. Mine was built in 11/99 and doesn't not have the lines running through the radiator, just the stock V10 tranny cooler.

I monitor my temps with a scannguage 2 and the other day with it 92* out, I was pulling a regular 16ft 2 axle trailer with a couch on it. Trans temp ran 190*. My normal range is around 150*-160*. That day coolant was 190* and so was trans.

All I ever tow now is just that trailer with odds and ends on it. I use to have a camper b4 this EX but will be getting another in a yr or so.

My question is, do I need to do the full tsb and replace radiator and all, or will a 6.0 cooler help enough?? Money is tight and I will hamper the time frame to get this all done.

Oh and if it matters, I'm in southern MS where summers reach upper 90s and very humid.

Tks for the help!!

Fellow Mississippian here. You are OK all the way up to 220°. Just put the 6.0 cooler on there and you should be fine. You're probably fine even without it.

I was hoping to hear that. I will just add the 6.0 cooler. I'm just afraid whT will happen when I tow a 9k lbs tt if just a utility trailer makes it go to 190*.

What part of MS r u?

I'm in Brandon (just outside of Jackson).

Low speeds (1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear) before the converter locks up is what heats you up VERY quickly. If you're doing a lot of interstate driving, you'll be fine. It's the in-town stuff that you REALLY have to watch the temps.

I've towed my share of heavy stuff:

So what exactly is the 6.0 cooler? Is it the stock cooler for the diesels or a common mod for diesels. Can you do it on the gassers?

The 6.0 cool is the oem cooler on the 6.0 deisel. It is the larger one ford makes. U can add it to the gassers. Just need to adapt the lines is all.

Now where is a good place to buy from? And what r the part numbers for the 26 row and 32 row? I did a search on a ford part website that I dare not say since I got drilled for saying and they came up at $175. There is a used one on eBay for $225. I would rather search by part number to make sure I get the right one.

Yep that's the 31 row and it is expensive. $375

What about the 26 row? I've heard that might be enough?

I have the 31 row and picked it up for $250 new.

I have heard several times that the 26 row is as efficient as the 31 row (different design and more effective). BTW- The 31 row is "huge".

One option would be to pick up another V10 cooler and put them in series. The V10 cooler is bigger than the stock 7.3L trans cooler (don't have a clue why Ford did that for the same transmission). You'd have to come up with a mounting arrangment.

Not sure if anyone has done this but it should almost double your cooling and might be less expensive.

So I have read elsewhere that the in radiator trans cooler is more effective than a stand alone air to water cooler, How can this be when the coolant that is in the radiator is 160 - 185 degrees and the air flowing over a cooler would be 90 degrees tops.

Oh yeah and how do you re arrange the oil filter and that mess going into the lower radiator hose and go to a stand alone oil cooler also?

Because water is much more efficient at transferring heat.
