So i bought the truck a week ago and since day one there has been a humming sound from about 40-55MPH. My friend keeps saying it is the tires but i still am bieng paranoid. I have brand new 285/75/16 Hancook DynaPro ATM's on it. the sound is ONLY from 40-45 and it is makeing me nervous. does anyone else have tire noise like this?
I could see possible tire noise but to me those look like typical all terrains and not big aggressive mud tires that are well known for their noise. Also if it were tire noise, I would expect it to just continue getting louder the faster you go and not suddenly go quiet again. You have 40-55 mph listed and then 40-45 mph listed but im assuming that when you hit the 45/55 mph mark the humming sound just tapers off and stops, correct? Is this a manual or auto tranny? Does it continue making noise if you change gears? If your in 4th gear humming and go to 5th gear and silence and then 4th gear humming, 5th gear silence i would say its your 4th gear but if continues to hum at the same pitch and volume levels despite gear changes i would think its in your driveline either driveshaft or in the axle. If its a 4x4 with the hubs unlocked, it could possibly be in your front hubs but not front axle/front driveshaft. Does the noise change at all during turns? If the hubs are locked in then the front tires rolling down the road would roll your front axle and driveshaft too. Talking about 4x4 got me thinking the transfer case could be involved too as its between the transmission and drive shafts
K I just confused myself reading over that so I'll try again. First off, is it only making noise at certain rpms. If its making noise at certain rpm range regardless of gear and mph i would say engine noise. If your in a 2x4, I would first try changing gears while its humming to see if it changes noise. 4th gear to 5th gear or into 3rd if you can at that speed. If its constant hum regardless of gear, i would think driveshaft or in the axle. If its only hum in a certain gear, then tranny. If 4x4, try all the above but if its making noise regardless of gear then i would say noise is from rear driveshaft, rear axle, front driveshaft or front axle. Maybe even try switching from 2 wheel drive into 4 wheel drive and see if that changes the hum. Without additional info, my gut feeling is your in an auto tranny truck and only noticing the noise when your in a certain gear and then when it shifts into a higher gear is when you notice the noise goes away but may have not realized that it shifted. If its not this, then I have no idea why it would be silent, then make noise and then be silent again as it spins faster.
It is a Auto 4x4. Sound comes in any gear whether i am in 4x4 or 2x4 it sounds like front drivers side to me and i keep thinking wheel bearing but im not sure, this is my first truck
