I know my truck has electronic ignition, but how do I tell if it is DuraSpark II? I'm sure its the original ignition in the truck which is a 78 F150. I'm debating whether or not to keep this ignition with a hotter coil or get the D.U.I Set up. I like the HEI style distributor you can't get much simpler than that.
Stock would be DSII. Distributor cap will have male ends and a square aluminum module mounted somewhere under the hood, not familiar with your specific vehicle. Module is about 4" square. Opinions vary, but I consider it to be one of the most reliable and easy to find parts for cheaply.
So I guess I DO have DSII, SWEET that just saved me 350 smackers. So what can I do to make it hotter? Just a better coil?
And I did noticed when I took the ignition module off the fender well yesterday, the potting compound on the back side has some damage. Are these modules available from various parts stores?
Modules are usually stocked at any parts store, but I prefer to buy from NAPA. You will notice it has a blue strain relief for the wires, make sure to get the same thing. Hotter coil can be used, but need to get one that requires external ballast resistor. The resistor is built in to the Ford wiring harness in the form of a resistor wire connecting close to ignition switch. Not the firewall mounted kind most people are familiar with.
If you get one from a parts store, beware. There are usually two options available. The cheap $30 Chinese made variety or the $90 quality Ford variety. The Chinese made is a shot in the dark with them lasting from 2 months to who knows how long.

Most autoparts store ignition modules are MADE in CHINA. This genuine Ford module is not.
You get what you pay for, buy the best and cry only once.
