I have a 98 E 150 and all of a sudden the brake lights dont work...turning the lights on and the blinker work fine ,just no brake lights so im assuming the brake light switch is bad.But my Haynes Manual separately mentions a brake light switch and a brake on/off (BOO) switch...are these the same thing?
on my 95 the brake pedal has a switch on it. the connector has a LG/R wire and a LG wire. the first is fused constant. the second is the output of the brake switch aka BOO for Brake On/Off Switch. of course, in my factory manual, it is also called the Brake Switch - sometimes both terms are on the same page. RRRRRRRR
anyway the BOO feeds the ABS modules, shift interlock, and the brake lights via the multi switch aka the turn signal switch.
try turning the hazard switch on and off a couple of times - if yours is on top of the steering column like mine, and you rarely use it, all sorts of crud gets in the switch. switching it on/off half a dozen times cleans it out and you may find your brake lights working again.
Thanks for the help! I actually ended up fixing 3 problems at once....Back in September I posted here about my ABS light blinking and my gear shift not coming out of park (https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...s-problem.html)
Well I went out and purchased a new brake light switch (aka Boo?) and after installing it the brake lights still didnt work...so I then went searching for blown fuses and found one,and replaced it and Voila! brake lights worked and It fixed the blinking ABS light and gear shift problem that I had been living with since September. Now I read somewhere that if that switch goes bad then you cant put your van in gear because it thinks the brakes arent being depressed, but why the blinking ABS light? I dont know...but its all working fine now so I hope this helps someone else with the same problem
