First of all, I would like to say hey tyo everyone. This is my very first post.
Now to the meet of the post.
I had to replace my old starter on my 89 f150 I6 300 with an aftermarket. When I crank the truck, it sounds as though the starter is still running. Makes a hellova racket.
Figured it was a "bad one". Got a new one and a starter solenoid...only seven bucks. I still get the same thing.
Could the flywheel be making contact with the starter gear when theh truck is running?
Should I remove the starter and shim it......the old one had none....I assumed they don't use them....
Find the PN of the starter that they sold you, then call another parts store and have them look up your starter by application to see if they come up with the same PN. It sounds like you have the wrong one. Ford starters don't need shims.
That's what I thought. Both of the starters I have put on came from the same parts store. One was the one year warantee and the other was the lifetime deal. both part numbers were different. i figured the second one would work but didn't.
Can you get your hands on the original starter? Did you compare it closely with the first replacement to make sure it was right? Did you call any other parts stores, or just the same one? Why did the original starter have to be replaced? Is the flywheel original? Has the trans or engine ever been pulled out? Is the separator plate still between them?
I called several other parts stores....good numbers.
I replaced that starter because it was lagging badly. Didn't compare starter gear position when looking at them.
The flywheel is original.
I have had the transmission out several times but I always replaced the cover plate between the trans and the engine.
I'm gonna take it out again and hopefully I cen get the parts jockeys to let me compare it to my old one.
What makes it even stranger is that the starter I took out was a replacement. Worked great for years.......Now this.....
Yes, there was a difference in the starters. I have a manual transmission. and put in a starter for an automatic. The difference is the position of the starger gear.
Funny thing is that no one asked me if I had a manual or automatic.
