new starter wont disengage
[FONT=Calibri]Starter problem with my 1999 Ford 5.4 f150.
Last few days I’ve had to cross the solenoid terminals in order to start up. After replacing the solenoid the starter would not disengage. Put the old solenoid back on, crossed term and the starter did the same thing. Bought new starter (what a job finding the upper bolt) replaced old one, and I’m still hearing the starter running along with the motor. What else?
Thanks

Very often when I hear this situation, a control lead has been put back on a wrong terminal.
That when powered up, it cannot remove it's power and holds the circuit up.
Recheck your work.
As a second possibility, the start relay has burnt contacts and burns closed.
The starter draws more than 100 amps depending on the motor load, so is hard on the start contactor over many years of service.
Good luck.

i had this same problem a few months ago. i was told a thousand things it could be and everyone wanted to charge 100-200 to even find out what it was. Long story short my buddy figured it out. if you take the plastic off the steering column and the fuse box panel you will see a white plastic box that is controlled by the ignition when you turn your key. take it out (very simple) and move the plastic slide with your hand and see how it operates. Mine was moving ok.. but not smooth. went to track auto and for 12 bucks got a new one and whalaa fixed... i burned up 3 starters before i figured out what it was. hope this fixes it for you.

soleniod has 3 terms terminals.
S term has slip on connection.(i couldnt get this wrong).
a top and lower post. a harness goes over both(i couldnt get this wrong).
that leaves 2 leads to be connected, one for the starter and one for the altternator, both go on the lower post. i had the aternator leads on the top post. after machanic changed to both on lower everythings good.
thank

I guess after reading the original post I assumed since you swapped the bad solenoid back in and out with the same results that you were consistent with the wiring and new the proper placement.
Looking back now, I see in post five you even stated that you wired it that way, but I guess I missed it.
Bluegrass called it!

Me too
I have a 2001 f150 5.4 xlt and my new starter is doing the same thing like the arm pinion or bendix is coming out cos it cranks my truck but it seems like it does go back in and it makes that nasty grinding noise against the motor and I just bought it today cos the original starter doesn't work anymore. This is the second one that I have brought but im just lost I have no idea what it could be. Any suggestions anyone??? Cos I need my baby back on the road !
Thanks in advance
