I knew i shouldnt have said anything about crossing the 200k threshold, dang alternator gave out on me this morning. Started out going to work, lights dimmed, radio cuts out, voltage is nil, managed to limp back to the house and swap out for my jeep to make it to work.
Problem is i just changed this out with a "lifetime" alternator last august when my OEM went out at about 185k. At the time all i had was the one vehicle operational and needed to get back on the road so i got (as best i can recall) the Ultima series "lifetime" replacement from Oreillys and gave my OEM for the core charge (mistake i know).
Anyway, thoughts? I would like to get rebuilt from local alternator shop but since i dont have my OEM core, will this "lifetimer" core be just as good to have a qualified person rebuild? Called back to Oreillys and they will replace what i have for another "lifetimer" Ultima. Would have to order a Motorcraft. Is what ii currently have worth rebuilding or shoudl I give Mr. OEM BABY Parts Guy Ed a call? Ive got some time to play with now that ive got alternative transportation and dont wanna do again in 9 mths.
I'd swap what you have for another "lifetime" unit and run that while looking in local junkyards, Craigslist, etc. for an OEM unit for cheap and get that one rebuilt. That way you could:
1. Go OEM again, baby!
2. Have a spare that has a lifetime warranty on it
I have 2 OEM units at home that I will eventually take in for a rebuild, especially now that I have two 7.3's in the driveway!
Cheap Chinese alternators CAN be brought up to OEM quality, but the way to do it is to open up the aluminum cases and drive all quality parts underneath. Not cheap.
I did just that. Went to Oreillys, tested it, confirmed it was bad. I had bought this unit last july as a reman, would have replaced with no charge for another reman but didnt have one on the shelf, only had a new made in mexico unit though for another $20, lets do it. Started doing the transaction and come to find out the core for the new alternator was only $5, but he told me the core i gave him was worth $35, so this is a first for me, after i exchagned my bad unit and upgraded for a new vs reman, i walked out the door with THEM giving ME $10 and change. Granted im still with a lifetimer unit, thats not a bad exchange if i do say so. Now its just time to look for an OEM unit to make things right. Thanks for the replies.
