have a 1996 351w the engine was rebuilt fews years ago, went to change the oil and noticed when i went to tighten the plug it was stripped. went and picked up another plug but that din't work. so i drained the oil and put some teflon tape on the bolt and also some black rtv, just for a quick fix. is there some kind of kit to fix this or what Thanks
Welcome to FTE. I'm guessing the pan threads are stripped? If so, I believe you can buy an oversized self-tapping plug, but I haven't had any experience with them. I've heard a few times they don't work too good.
Buy a new pan, or take off yours and weld a nut to it with the proper threads.
Call an auto parts store and ask if there are any kits available.
because the plug seals with its rubber gasket, not on the threads, the alignment of the hole is critical, so to simply tap your own threads is likely to fail. i just changed the pan on a snodge that jiffy-lube (or equivalent) stripped, they used a temporary plug that resembled a toggle bolt on the back side, and had a very thick rubber gasket on the outside. they seem to be good enough to get by for awhile, but you'll want a new pan as soon as you can.
drain the oil, weld the old-stripped plug into place, drill a new hole in the pan, weld a new bung (or nut) onto the pan, torque a new plug (or bolt) into the new bung/nut, repeat as many times as necessary, enjoy.
or be the first to pioneer the usage of wine bottle corks as a stripped-oil drain plug-replacement and record how many miles ya made it with oil pressure. (driving a few miles w/o oil press doesnt count).
