went to oil change place this am and they stripped my drain plug ...what can i do to repair this? i need my truck for work , any help or ideas would appreciated . thanks
Check with the local parts place and see if they have any for that situation. There used to be oversized drain plugs that would retap the threaded hole so you could go on with life... Personally, though I would make the oil change place take care of it.
I did the same thing to mine two oil changes ago. Went to Pep Boys and purchased a replacement. Less than $3. The pan threads are tougher than the drain plug threads, so the drain plug goes first. Pretty smart. The next oil change was a peice of cake; no leaks or dribbles since then.
Its a little expensive but if the threads in the pan are still in good shape go with a Fumoto valve that way you never have to worry about stripping oil plugs ever again. I went and bought a F/V and put on my 95 PSD its the best thing I ever did I won't have worries about stripping pan plugs. The biggest problem is these oil change places never change the washer so the plug gets over tightened sure enough pulls the threads.
Over the years I have delt with stripped oil pan plugs I have retapped the threads and used oversized plugs. One case I had to make my own plug with a fine thread bolt and tap it was on a gasser what a SOB.
To get the pan off these engines you pretty much have to take the engine out to get the pan off.
