Thanks F250, Thats alot of great advice and I value your input on this build. So SBC 3/8 Rocker studs will work? So I guess that means I gotta buy the SBC 1.6 rockers too, right? I'm not having the shop do anything to the head yet until I get the cam kit that way we will know what needs to be done as far as springs, etc. Right now they are just checking the head for cracks and figuring what has been milled off. And yeah the block is getting checked also. As far as MPG's well that really hasn't crossed our minds. The goal is to put together a combo that works well together and makes good power. The truck will be a "go to Sunday Meetin Truck" not a daily driver.
Oh yeah one more question. That really narrow stock radiator in the truck always had a tough time cooling the stock motor. Can I go to a V8 radiator? will it mount up? That stock 6 radiator is really narrow (width wise). I am gonna run a seperate trans cooler and maybe that will help!
What I love about the sbc stuff is that it is usually 1/2 the price of the blue oval stuff. Go figure. I'll try to remember to get you the part # for the rocker studs. I used them not b/c they were sbc, but b/c they were about the right length out of the head, and b/c they were the right thread diameter.
If you go with a 7/16 out of the head stud, then you can buy a set of bbc roller rockers (1.7--1.73) on ebay for about $100. They increase you v.lift, and the rocker ratio from ford 1.6 to chevy 1.7, or 1.73, depending on which you buy. You just have to determine whether your head has adequent room where the p.rod goes. That is better than the $267 for the 1.6 Harland Sharp rockers made for this engine. I used the bbc rockers for a while and loved 'em. It was a kick in the pants to get on the freeway and punch it. I laughed every time, until gas hit $4 a gallon. Then they became the girlfriend who was no longer worth the dinners on the town.
Regarding the radiator: There is a good article in True Blue Trucks magazine, about restoring an old I6, and using a efi year X flow radiator. Direct bolt in, with efi year hose. That is what I would use. Before I knew that I installed a custom Summit xflow, and it was a major pia, with welding brackets, etc.
Definately port that head!! The difference is Grannies station wagon vs. burn outs at the friday night hand out. And you have to go with a lobing cam!! I'd recommend the Isky 262, lobing, but on the mild side. or the Clifford Performance 264 (don't use bbc rockers here; it has major lift already), or the serious Comp 268. Don't use the comp lifters, or the bbc rockers here either. Those selections, imo, go from economical mpg, to middle of the rod, to full blown throw it out the window and race. And they sound that way in increments as well.
Oh yeah, with your build, you want the most expensive $60 Fel-pro hp head gasket. Don't skrimp here. If you do it can come back and bite you in the wallet.
I'm gonna go ahead and order some EFI manifolds. After thinking about it, header ARE a PITA! That and the manifolds are MUUUUUUCH cheaper. But with these EFI manifolds, do I HAVE to buy a Y pipe or can the muffler shop hook me up with True duals?, which is what I want.
The only way your gonna get true duals is if you use two 3cyl headers and run both pipes all the way back.
Sorry fella's for the lack of updates. I'll be back at it tomorrow. I took a little break this weekend and went fishing in the blue water for Mahi Mahi. Anyway the plan tomorrow is ALOT of frame cleaning and getting it ready for paint.

Dude, are you serious? Dorado in May? Really? Oh, joys of having the Gulf Stream at your back door. Good eating, and better sport. They stay up and fight like a man, don't dive like tuna.
I just read your entire thread...uncle Jessie is quite a good looking truck! I'm gonna be following your build...how much of this would y'all say applies to an efi 6?

Dude, as a fisherman, sitting in the stinking city, waiting for July to hit Cabo, from the bottom of my heart, I hate you. Nice little bull though. Aren't the dodo's fun? love to see 'em tail walk. Even better when I'd hook one on the party boats in S. Diego, and it'd run across 20 guy's lines, and the deck hand would calmly run over and cut all their lines!!
I hope you had a blast. I still hate you. (Trick. We used to take the first one, and cut the line and tie it to the transom to lure the others for play time.)
