i am doing the dismantle on my 55 f100 and came upon a question. the previous owner decided to mold the front fenders in with body putty therefore it is all cracking from body flex etc. is it better to try and grind this out with a grinder or try to sand it out?????
For major bondo removal, an 8" pad like this one in the link below on a buffer or grinder and some 36 or 40 grit sandpaper will knock it right down real quick. It's the best way to go, imho, and it should be available locally, along with the sandpaper you need at a body shop supply store. Sandblasting runs the risk of making too much heat and warping the panels.
Lots of good advise so I will through in one more, I use a brush on chemical stripper from walmart that soften the bondo up pretty well and used a putty knife to remove, though it is messy and you will need to make sure you clean up the area very well before reappling primer.
I used a 4" wire wheel on a grinder not the home depot wire wheel,it was a good ol made in the usa-coarse wheel and it cleaned 1/4" thick bondo in 2 minutes.
If it's just plastic filler, my preferred method is chipping it off in chunks with a putty knife and a small hammer.
I started this on the roof of my 56... Whole skin and gutters were coated in a thick coat of...
Oh, it wasn't plastic filler (aka Bondo, etc) it is FIBERGLASS resin. That stuff is a real.. 'whoot' to remove. It started taking the metal with it.
My vote is the wire brush on an angle grinder. I did all the bodywork on my 56 and nothing works faster or better. DO NOT USE ANY CHEMICALS! They stay in the seams and mess up your paint later.
HINT: do it outside where you can wash all the debris away or you'll be finding bondo dust on everything for years. Wear coveralls, if you have them.
