something I gotta say
Second... spent most of yesterday in Pleasant Grove Alabama with a group of my church members helping a family sift through the rubble of their home and the remains of their life. A three level home reduced to one basement wall and a path of debris 300 yards long. It's one home on a short dead end street. Of the twenty or so homes there, not one was spared... not one is salvagable. We tried to salvage what we could but were basically moving debris from one place to another.. It is the most devastating thing I've ever witnessed. Whole subdivisions were destroyed. 24" trees (and larger) were twisted off like twigs. The destruction is total and intimidating. Spend the evening sorting and marking clothes at another church's relief operation... So much food and supplies and rooms filled with clothes and shoes and blankets.. It was amazing how people have poured out their hearts to help those around them.. and in some cases to give thanks that they aren't in the same situation.
Folks, this was only one street in one subdivision in one small community. It goes on for miles and miles. They reported that over 200 tornados crossed over Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. One town in Alabama was hit twice by two separate twisters.
This will be their lives for several months and possibly they will never recover completely.
If an opportunity presents itself for you to help please do it. Send a box of clothes, write a check... if you can, join in the relief effort in some way. And keep them in your mind next month and the month after... this isn't going away any time soon. Most of all pray. Ask God to give them comfort, strength and courage. Pray for all those that are helping put some sanity back in the thousands of lives that have been torn apart.
If you can make a donation... send a check to Salvation Army or United Way or a local church mark it Alabama Disaster Relief so the money comes here.. Do it in your mamma's name or in her memory... it's what she'd want you to do..
this group turned out for me when my Grandson was fighting cancer so I know what they can/will do. It's something we're good at.
thanks
John
