460 vs FE vs 4.6

I had an 85 F250 carb 4 speed 4.10 long bed. at 65 MPH I got 12 mpg at 85 MPH I got 16 or better. That engine would get into its powerband and ran like a top. I should have never gotten rid of it. I bet I would be squeasing close to 20 mpg out of it by now with a better gear selection.
It was nice not watching the fuel gauge not trickle down but hard to drive 85 mph anywhere. I remember a st trooper flashing his lights at me going the other way and when I slowed down he just waved to say thank you.

For example, all these selections will not get really good gas mileage because of the gearing requirement it takes to move 2.5 tons of iron. A 4.6 with an o/d 5 speed could get 20 mpg hwy with a 2.70 gear, but it would be an absolute turd on the street. Put a set of 4.10/4.30 gears in it, it's much more fun but mileage drops accordingly. I say put the biggest frankenstein motor in it you can, and drive it to according to how much money your allowed to spend before the wife kills you
