Before ya'll send me directly to the sticky, I read it, nothing really seemed to exactly fit my case.
When I turn the key on the "wait to start" light turns off without any delay then the truck starts immediately cycling the glow plugs (constant clicking) but the previous owner said he replaced the glow plugs but that there was a short in the wiring that he could not find. Truck starts no problem, takes a few seconds sometimes but usually starts right up. The PO told me that if I just cycle the ignition a few times then it will heat the glow plugs up enough to start it up just fine in the cold without plugging it in but I have only owned it for about a week and its been warm lately. Any of you guys think its the relay or the glow plugs and the PO was just blowing smoke up my **** or do ya'll think its really just a short? Thanks again for all your help.
i would start by checking the glow plugs.
you want to make sure they are motorcraft (which are BERU brand) only.
you'll need to pull a couple to see the brand name.you'll hopefully see BERU stamped on them.if they're not,you should consider ordering a set of 8.however don't replace them without testing the system first.don't bend over at the stealership for them either.you can grab 'em online for about 10 bucks a pop.
as to reasons for why,a simple search will answer this questions.you'll see threads of stuck glow plugs and all kinds of headaches when owners or previous of trucks some bought, used off brand gp's.
next.id start by checking the ground wire at the relay.you may find its corroded.a simple test would be to run a devoted ground wire.some simply run a devoted ground permanently to fix the issue.
report back your findings.

I have been reading up on this stuff for a while, I know the motorcraft are the only way to go. Only thing is I just recently got my hands on this truck so I havent had time to check all that stuff. Hopefully its just the ground, never done glow plugs and I have heard they are a bitch so i really dont wanna mess with em right now if I dont have to. Hopefully the PO put in the right ones. Ill check the ground tomorrow, maybe thats all the problem is. Ill report back with any findings.
they are actually easier to change than spark plugs in a gasser because you can see them easy, and you don't have to worry about hitting the firewall with a ratchet.
the ones under the factory ATS turbo's i hear is a real joy though lol.but there's tricks for getting at those too.
checking out one or two up front should take all of just a couple mins.
now is the time to be sure what they are.you have better odds of getting junk glow plugs out now rather than latter.
just a suggestion.don't say i didn't warn ya latter down the road when ya have to pull the heads.
some guys here got some off brands from U-Haul recently.i dunno how they dare to run 'em but wish 'em all the best of luck.id use BERU or burnt out BERU's w/the block heater only in mine.

Lol, I know, If I find out other wise Ill do the monkey work. Just asked the PO he said either motorcraft or Autolites. But he said he still had the boxes cause he just did it a month ago and he is going to check real quick and let me know.
Ya they tend to last about a week at best, i don't even know why they even make them since they are complete junk and only a buck less then our Famed MOTORCRAFT!
