im not sure..i just havent been impressed with them...ive driven a few and they didnt seem to have much power..i know i am wrong in that but i just wasnt impressed..plus it gives me an excuse to get a diesel! lol
The 351w is one of the best engines Ford ever produced, amazing untapped potential for old school performance add on's and tons of aftermarket support. The 300-6 is a great motor too, basically a industrial duty motor.........but not a performance star by any means.
yeah the 300 is not a preformance engine but we still have the orignial 300 in our 81 bronco and it still runs amazing. it has never been rebuilt and i know it has well over 200k on it..they just dont die! it is the most reliable motor i have ever had..and they are super easy to work on!
I was going to go with the 390 I have, but I'd like to get more than 8MPG out of it. With a 5 speed, and maybe fuel injection in the future, should be able to get good power and decent mileage out of it.

I REALLY do not want to upset the FTE diesel fraternity, BUT......Look around FTE, half the threads are "Something is wrong with my diesel".............For a young guy starting a family with limited funds, the diesel expense looks prohibitive in all aspects from under the hood to to the fuel door itself. And diesels in the lower price range are gonna be questionable mechanically and not the most reliable transportation.
I'll say for pulling, the diesel is the way to go. BUT, I wouldn't have one otherwise. Now, being a diesel owner myself, I love driving mine. But, with the maintenance, and now the price of diesel just getting stupid, I would probably even reconsider it for pulling.
Now, you're probably asking "why don't you sell yours?"........Well, because I love that truck!!
i wont be buying a diesel for a couple years..once we have some cows and stuff and need the motor to pull heavy trailers and such.. i know they are not practial as a dd lol..
another reason i like the 300 is the gas mileage..i know if i tried i could probably get one to 25 mpgs..that may be a little too optomistic..but i have recorded 22.5 before on my old flareside

yeah i liked the 300-6 too. that 82 250 i had would pull a mack truck with brakes locked. but it won't go much over 55mph tho. it was really low geared. i finally sold it for like 100$ and it ran and drove. the oil pump in it started going away. that thing would hammer the rods when you started it cold. but it was a beat up, rusted out one step away from the crusher looking truck but it ran alright. i used to clamp a pair of vise grips on the fuel line so nobody could steal it.
I need to pull something heavy, I have a low mile 460 F-250 with a few "extras" thats never been upset by pulling a load including a 12,000lb 26ft cabin cruiser we pulled over the coast range to its new home on the coast.........I just cannot justify the costs of a diesel.
what kind of mileage do you get in the 460? my friend said on a good day he would get 8mpgs is that accurate?
I drive pretty conservative........Unloaded freeway once to Portland (no hills) I got 12.8 mpg, with the 9 1/2 ft Lance camper and boat in tow over the Cascade summits (over 6,000ft) about 10-10.5mpg at 60mph over 6% grades. My buddy has a 94 Chevy 2500 w/350 and similar set up, he get 8.5 mpg screwing the snot out of it, to do the same thing my 460 does at 2,000 rpms.
