My '94 F150 2wd has made a popping or clunking noise in the front end since I bought it back in August.
I first thought it was loose or missing brake pad anti-rattle clips, but I have just completely rebuilt my front brakes, and no change.
I also have greased all the fittings on the steering parts that have them.
What I have NOT greased is what ever the part is that has taken the place of the old fashioned king pins that I'm used to on older Ford trucks, do these have grease points that I'm not seeing? or am I missing something else all together?? Thanks!
I have a 95 F150 with front end clunks also. So far I've replaced the radius arm bushings and tightened the lower shock attachments. The shocks made the bigest difference, took away most of the noise. Still have a knock and next is to check the ball joints.
Supercab the parts that take the place of the king pins are balljoints. They do wear out fairly often. The factory ones arent greasable.
The common places to look for clunks and rattles are for worn ball joints, radius arm bushings, lower shock bolts, brake pads anti-rattle clips, sway bar end links, tie rod ends, worn caliper slides, loose brackets such as radius arm brackets, loose wheel bearings, loose fender bolts etc etc.
Racerguy, I wonder if I could switch back to king pins, I always thought ball joints were for cars, and not trucks, may be I could just remove everything from the I beams out from a pre-1980 F150 and install on my '94, my '78 F150 has over 300k on the original king pins, always kept greased, no wear that I know of.
I'm not sure if the parts would interchange or not. I just cant see going back to kingpins. Ball joints are sooooo much easier to work on and usually last a long time too.
