Blow By???

I took my truck in the other day and the Mechanic took a look a the miles on the truck 117,000, then the sooty tail pipes ( DPF Delete system with H&S MIni Maxx) and said that I had Blow By? I am assuming that means oil is getting in where it is not supposed to be. Is there a fix like RESTORE? or do i have to spend a couple of grand to get it fixed? I am not sure why i have sooty tail pipes if there is not DPF and i have the delete DPF on my tunner but if I am getting on the HWY who ever is behind me better have a good idea of what is in front of them before the black cloud gets to them. I would like the black cloud to not be there ideally. lol. Thank you in advance

2008 Ford F350 King Ranch, 4x4, Crew cab, SRW, Short bed, Miles 117,000. S&B cold air intake, H&S Mini Maxx DPF delete tunner, 295/60/20

The DPF is what traps the soot (black cloud). With no DPF then you will have the black pipes whether there is a black cloud or not.

The black cloud is usually the result of an overfueling situation. Brought on by putting more fuel than air into the cylinder. Normally as the turbo's spool and bring more air to the party the black goes away.

Thank you so much for the black soot mention. I wasnt sure how that DPF thing worked... now it makes sense. So do you think the Mechanic just looked at the tail pipes and said you have blow by. Is there a way for me to test the Blow by thing out?

Oh yes...part two of your question....yes you will have some blow-by. The 6.4 design...as I understand it is made with a little extra room in there cylinders.

The top ring is a keystone ring. Designed to be a little loose till that motor gets good and hot and working.

Designed that way to accomidate the high boost levels this motor can tolerate.

This is one reason that some of these motors can make oil. They are doing it by low rpms and then you go thru a cleaning cycle.

A contrast to this is myself. I don't make oil as I am generally towing/hauling or doing a hwy run. Very little city driving.

Even on my summer run last year out west with regens every 130 miles I had .5% fuel in the oil.

So I would assume your tech did not know you have a programmer and a dpf delete for one.

You also could still be overfueling it so I would take it to a stock setting and run it there and see how bad the smoke is.

ok great info. I do not tow with the tunner on but was running the hot setting when on the hwy. (which is where I do the majority of my driving) I have tunned it to wild which is just above the stock setting. I will see how this works. I have also read that they PCV might be out or clogged would that help to change it and is it hard to get too

no pcv. Look at your oil fill spout..see the hose. It is connected to the air inlet. Remove that hose and witness any blowby.

At any rate other will chime in and give there thoughts on this matter. I am certainly not the expert.
