I have a 1997 f150 5.4l 4x4 and in the past year i have went through 3 rear transmission mounts and 3 transfer case adapters. I have no clue why they keep breaking. Is this a common problem since the adapter is made of cast aluminum? and is it possible to get these in like a cast iron or something that will hold up to harsh conditions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What is the status of the ENGINE mounts? Worn-out, broken, or loose bolts? Or where they mount to have elongated holes? If the engine is allowed to counter-torque too much, then the trans mount and transfer case would get a torque load they weren't designed to take. Just a thought.
my motor mount broke last week and was replaced but do you think that it was worn out so much a year ago to put that much strain on the transmission and tranfercase?
Probably. BOTH engine mounts need to be good. One tends to get lifted, the other tends to get compressed countering torque. All that working of rubber eventually breaks them down. Engine oil, trans fluid, power steering fluid can also speed the degradation of the rubber.
If only one engine mount was replaced, I would replace the other one, too.
The trans mount is there to locate the trans up/down/left/right. Usually not designed to handle much torque, as that is the job of the engine mounts.
