How much of a pain is it to use an adapter plate to go from a solid cast 460 c6 to a 300? Where might I find such a thing? I reeeeally don't feel like pulling the transmission when I pull the remains of a 460 out.
Or, what is required to convert to a 4 speed?
I have a 1981 f250 300/4 speed 4x4 for parts, and an 85 as well. I bought the 83 with the 460 mainly for the body, and the fact that is was insurable, whereas my other 2 are not. I was told that the 460 needed a head gasket, but upon removing the first head, found, in addition to 3 bent push rods, minimum 4 cracked pistons. So now the motor is getting pulled, and from what I've learned, the transmission as well.
So you want to run a 300/six and the C6 from the 460?
If so I do not know of any adapter plate to go from the large 460 to small 300 bell housing pattern.
If there was I don't know if you would have the room between motor and radiator.
If you want to use a C6 you will have to find a small block bell housing pattern C6.
For the 4sp you would need pedals, clutch linkage, flywheel & assy. for the six, bell housing to fit the small pattern and the trany you will get.
You would also need the stick trany floor cover and front yoke and/or drive shaft.
If going this route best to buy a stick truck for all the parts and even then you may need to replace/fix the clutch linkage parts as both of my trucks the linkage needed fixing.
Even if you found an adapter, it would not be cheap. The parts you need are in plentiful supply in most areas of the country. I think I would go with a 5 speed instead of a 4 speed if you could.
Here are some places in California that have the lighter duty 5 speed trans.

I am in BC.
And just for the record, I've driven 5 speed and 4 speed, and actually prefer the T18.
It won't be hard to sit the 300 with the 4 speed in place. You will have to grind/drill the motor mount brackets out of one truck and transfer/bolt them into the other. The 300 motor mount system is setup a little different.
A T19/19, or NP435 shouldn't be that hard to find. If you can, get all the parts with it that you'll need like transmission hump cover, crossmember, clutch linkage, etc.
I see one of your other trucks have a 4 sp so some of the parts could come from that. You don't say how the other truck is parts wise. I take it both of those are parts trucks? You'd be way ahead if one or both of those had a setup like you need.
I'm good for parts. Both my 81 f250 and 85 f250 are 4 speed 300s. And the power train on both is untouched.
Be aware the 81 300 six will be conventional carb and electronic ignition with the module on the inner fender. The 85 six will have a electronic carb and a computer controlled ignition system. So you may want to check to see which engine is in better shape mechanically, but use the older 81 wiring and engine dress on it.
The 81 was my daily driver for about 3 months before the lights decided to stop working at an RCMP roadblock, aND so it got pulled off the road due to that. Never had any issue with the motor itself. Is currently running propane, and has been for at least the last 20 years. I am 3rd owner of it. The 85 I bought for the much better box and the tires that were on it. Was told that she'd fire given the power, but I have yet to have gone and fired her up.
Correct me if I am wrong, but to convert the 300 back to gasoline, I'll just need a different, gas carb? The existing fuel pump in the new truck wired in and heater core lines sent directly to the proper locations on the block and water pump, since the propane mixer is no longer required?
You may want to check the 460 fuel system. A lot of the 460's had a oddball fuel system with electric pumps in the tank or tanks, relay up front and the whole mess was powered through a oil pressure switch. Gives people a lot of problems when things go wrong. So you might want to pull the fuel system from the 85 truck if yours is missing in the 81.
You will have to study your propane conversion. Some of them retain the old carb and just use a jet to inject the propane through the old carb. They just turn the gasoline off to the carb with a valve.
Will double check the fuel system. It has an aftermarket electric fuel pump. And the carb that's in the 81 specifically says that it is a propane carb. Will look at the fuel system more once the motor is completely out.
