I have a 2000 turbo diesel and has a 4" turbo back exhaust, and a K+N filter in the factory air box,and a boost gage, and pyrometer(need new pyrometer sensor) does anyone have any recomendations for a good low priced programer/chip/tuner? pros/cons any opinions would be great. Thanks in advance.
IMO I wouldn't bother with a edge, superchips, bullydog, etc.. They are only generic tunes and could be better. Look into cale at tyrant diesel, beans diesel performance, Jody with DP tuner, tony wildman, or matt at gearhead automotive performance.
First thing you may want to look at replacing is the K&N filter. They have been known to not fit the box so well and allow debris into the intake tract which will damage the engine and turbo.
Most will tell you to go with a chip over a programmer as your options are not as limited.
If it were me I would get a DP-Tuner or a TS Chip and get custom tunes.
You need to determine what you want before asking what to get. If you tow or just want a DD it will make a difference. Low priced depends on what your price is. You can get your PCM reflashed with a custom tune, but is limited to only that tune.
PLEASE GET RID OF THAT K&N!!!! Unless u have extra $$$$ to dump into a new motor, take it from someone who knows. As far as tuner goes, x2 on the custom tunes from dp or a ts switch from one of the other guys. If you don't wanna go that route, I have a superchips cortex programer I'm looking to sell, hahaha.
I'll also tell you that the guys at DP Tuner are very helpful. I've been reading all the forums and trying to filter emotion from sound advice. Decided that most people really like the DP Tuner setup so I sent them some questions. They answered all my questions and recommended a setup for me. Price wise, might not be that cheap, but I want this truck to last a long time and wouldn't risk going cheap.
Going to pull my PCM codes and get my DP Tuner on order this weekend. Now, just have to figure out what gauges I want....
My truck is setup almost the same as yours, except with a 6637 filter. Ive got the dp tuner on mine and lets just say you won't be disappointed at all if you choose dp
I took advice of u all and just put a fram air filter in!! My K N filter did seem to fit perfect and airtite? DP tunes sounds like the way to go. I don't really like the idea of plugging in a chip to the computer. Sounds safer just plugging in the programmer to the diagnostic port and downloading?
What you really should do is order a 6637 Donaldson filter kit from Clay at Riffraff Performance Diesel, he's in our sponsor section above, then you'll be talking about filtration and saving your motor and turbo from dusting. Click here Riffraff Diesel: RDP 6637 Filter Kit

You can have DP-Tuner load tunes on a programmer too. A chip is not unsafe, but like all electrical devices can create damage. Most plug in tuners will not give the best bang for the buck........this is coming from someone who went that route first.
Has anyone heard of 5 star tuning? they have 3 custom tunes that they will send you with the programer. Has anyone tried them?
Yes. They are a sponsor here. They do great work with the 5.4 gas engine and the V10 and have heard many great things about them with those engines.
On the diesel side, there are other, more favorite tunes. Many, many people here have bought one tuner (ususally off the shelf) and then upgraded to one that is MUCH better. Since they've already wasted their money on the wrong product, learn from their mistakes and invest wisely. There is a world of difference in performance between a custom tune and off the shelf tune, but there isn't really that much difference in price.
