5.8 OIL COOLER / OIL FILTER ADAPTER?????????? HELP

I got my new brass and copper 4 core rad in, everything is hooked up and running but I have a coolant leak from that stupid oil cooler thing. It's coming from where the bottom hose mounts, it's the adapter housing itself is cracked where the hose inlet meets the body of it.

Can't find the proper name, or part number. There is a picture of what i'm talking about here:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...is-called.html

Any ideas or help to get this thing fixed would be greatly appreciated. I would remove it entirely if that is an answer but what lower rad hose would I use in place of the original 3 piece unit>

Thanks

Remove it. Very common mod. I removed mine. Use a regular F150 hose without oil cooler after removing.

If you need an oil cooler or parts Ive got mine. 93k miles on it. Only removed to run aftermarket oil pressure sending units.

LMK if you need any pics too.

EDIT: Forgot to tell you it will take the bigger Motorcraft FL1A oil filter after the cooler is removed.

THANKS!!

I guess the oil cooler is coming off next. Cripes, I should get another mile to the gallon with all the crap I've removed from this engine.

I will be removing this next. I don't know about "needing" this oil cooler but if I find that I do need one I'll be letting you know. This set up is a PITA.

I may have more questions later.

Thanks again.

OK, so I have some of that plumbers repair epoxy around the base of the hose outlet and that quelled the leak down to a very minor drip (like 4 drops in the drain pan overnight), which will be ok until I can remove the oil cooler thing as 86F150302 mentioned above. Gotta have the truck for work first thing in the morning.

NOW the dash temp guage is moving more like a tach. Weirdest thing I've ever seen; it's all over the place. I checked to make sure the sensor connector is secure. It starts off normal then pins over to extremely hot, then balances around the M in normal. No signs of extreme heat coming from the engine. Reminder I just put in a 4 core brass and copper rad. I think the aluminum rad with plastic ends was 4 core also.

Does the dash guage work off the sensor by the ditributor or is that just for the computor and is there another one on the engine just for the temp guage?

I'd be going mental if this wasn't so much fun............

Regards

Thread Update:

Following the advice of my FTE brothers and special help from fellow Floridian 86F150303, I removed the cracked and leaking oil cooler assembly yesterday. But NOT without some un-expected drama, as is usual with the Ford truck I love so much.

First getting the F150 replacement hose from the local auto parts supplier was like pulling teeth, and after getting and installing the wrong hose, I ended up taking the F250 5.8 part in complete to Advanced Auto Parts (too busy to give a ****), then to AutoZone and the Manager did hook me up with the correct replacement sans oil cooler adapter.

Second it was hinted that I could just remove the oil cooler assembly and screw on the regular Ford oil filter. NOPE. The threaded oil filter holder that is screwed into the engine was a smaller thread, and the tool to take this off was a 11mm allen wrench, which, of course, none of the auto stores had. Thank God for ACE Hardware, who had 1 left for a paltry $6.79. AWESOME. Add some red Locktight so the stupid thing wouldn't come off everytime I unscrew the oil filter and some german torque (Guten-tight), hopefully that thing is in the engine to stay.

While I had everything off and empty I installed the fuel pressure gauge onto the fuel rail as per Conanski's directions, which was months in the making. Long story for another thread.

Bought and installed a different and larger capacity oil filter which matched the threads and the gasket surface, installed the replacement F150 lower rad hose, refilled everything, soaked the engine and front diff down with engine cleaner, drank beer for 15 minutes, rinsed off the engine, made the wife angry with all the crap that ended up on the concrete driveway, fired up the engine and watched for leaks. So far so good. Wifey is taking it for a test drive as I type.

Once again I am indebted to members of this forum for their selfless guidance. Hopefully my experiences will help someone in the future.

Now to deal with the 28psi fuel pressure and figure out how to install that damned front steering dampner.

Happy Sunday.

Thanks for reporting back on your progress. It's a sign of the times that you almost always have to bring the old part with you when going to the parts store. I'm fortunate that I have a couple of Napas nearby and get most of my "critical" parts from them.

I have a 1995 C-150 centurion that is leaking oil around the cooling unit. Can I just delete this cooling system? Will I need a new radiator hose? What will I do with the hoses running to the cooling part? will the engine tend to run hot if I remove the unit?

As noted in the thread above, yes you can delete the oil cooler. It's very unlikely to cause any issues.

But notice I didn't say you can "just" delete it. You will have to physically remove it, you will have to find the correct lower hose, and you will have to deal with the oil flow and oil filter mount. Usually that last part means taking the oil cooler / filter mount off and figuring out how to mount a filter. I guess that's easier on some engines than others (it was a royal pain on my '97 460).

Since your's is a 150 it probably doesn't have a 460 so I can't help you with specifics, but others probably can.

When I removed my oil cooler on my 5.8:

Remove filter, the nipple that the filter screws to is removed with a large allen wrench.

The sandwich adapter block is removed after disconnecting the hoses & bending the tab that keeps it from turning on the engine block so it can be unscrewed.

Remove adapter & screw the nipple back in the engine block.

Purchase FL-1A Motorcraft oil filter or equivalent.

Use regular replacement lower hose.

Don't know about the drama described above or if applicable to your Cent. (its been a while since I did it, might have missed something)

Good luck

I had to ask for a lower radiator hose for a 5.0L vs. my 5.8L in order to get the correct one for use without the oil cooler.

Hi. Welcome to FTE.

Go here:

Click on little blue button on left that says "New Thread"

It's small.

Start a new thread, suggested, "Losing Coolant, Maybe Oil Cooler".

Good luck & welcome again.
