I am getting ready to lift my truck and run 38's and was wondering what gears I have. There no sticker on the door and I can't read anything on the front diff. tag. All I can make out on the rear tag is
V111C
410 10 2 0C31
There is some other numbers before these but the only way to read them is to take the bolt out of the rear that is holding the tag on. Any help as to what this code means would be appreciated. Thanks in Advance.
P.S. The rear and in a Ford 10.25 Truck is a 91 F250
And to complete the decode: the V111C is the axle model number. you'll need this if you ever have to buy parts for the axle. the OC31 is production sequence number.
Taking this info that I just learned I went oput and scrubbed all the oil off of my front diff tag and it read 4.09. Is it ok to have 4.09 in front and 4.10 in the rear? I'm thinging that the difference is so little that you wouldn't be able to notice.
Ford always does that so the front wheels pull slightly in the mud. This makes steering slightly better than if the ratios were the same. It also means you shouldn't ever engage 4WD on a high-traction surface, or you could stretch/break the t-case chain or do other driveline damage.
I was curious to see if Ford used two different ratio's in our new FX4 Ranger and found that both front and rear are 4.10's. I'm sure the IFS and rack & pinion steering contributed to this decision.
There are only certain ratios available for each axle, and sometimes, they're exactly the same. Both the 9" & the D44 offer 3.30, so you'll occasionally find that on early 80's FS trucks.
Hey steve83 - My f150 has 3L55 975 in the Rear but the Front has two sets of numbers printed on the diff itself that says 3.55 976B and 355 88. I know the 975 is 9.75" for the case size. Any Idea what the 976b or the 88 stands for?
Dan-
The 9.75 is the ring gear size, not the case. The 3.55 in the rear is a limited slip. The front is an 8.8" ring gear, offset, reverse cut 3.55 open diff (88 should also have a "." in there). The 976b may be the last four of the part number or a casting mark, I can tell you have a 5.4 from that rear end. They only came on the 5.4's.
