I personally would not go with either, there are a ton of threads on here and the other sites warning about edge tuners scrapping transmissions and bullydogs throwing false codes and wiping PCM's.

My personal opinions is that you would be better off getting something you can get some custom tunes for. Maybe an SCT with custom tow tunes, even then different tune writers will get you different results on milage.

Plus, without studs, gauges or other supporting mods you might be better off going at the trip "stock". That's just my opinion though.

If you are going to be pulling 5 k and have a 6 inch lift and 37s your mileage is going to suck Josh. A programer will not do much because of your right foot, just buy the fuel and go

Wholeheartedly agree with the above....

BUT,
if you need to 'convince' someone that a tuner will help the tow and mpg...

get an sct ---- with custom tunes from one of the better tuners here.... you will get 1 to 2 mpg better and lot's more responsiveness...
I personally went with IDP.... and can't drive my Ex stock now !

fyi 5k is not much to worry about towing with a tuner, just make sure you have opened up your exhaust to flow better and mybe get a scangauge2 to monitor it
and go for it !

You won't gain enough mileage to offset the cost of the tuner anytime soon. However, a good custom SCT tune (contact Eric at Innovative Diesel, awesome tow tunes) can improve mileage, shifting, and driveability while towing.

You're basically driving a garage door down the highway at 70mph; every square foot of frontal area takes a certain amount of HP to move, so easiest way to get better mileage is to reduce the frontal area of the truck, meaning ditch the lift and tires. Unless you do that, there is no way around physical reality; you will always need to produce a certain amount of horsepower to move the truck. Less frontal area, less HP, less fuel.
