If I remember correctly there was a thread in here mentioning the 6 speed manual has plastic synchros in it. I'm sure I'n not exactly right but am looking at a 2000 F350 with 139k miles and a 6spd. Just wondering if the 6spd is as durable and reliable as the was. My Dad put over 350k on his 88 F250 Dsl with a 5spd manual, am hoping the 6spd is the same.
Any additional info is always welcome.
Lots has to do with how you treat it, and if you plan to modify the truck for more HP. You should also do a search and look for clutch fork issues. I don't remember what years, but some had a weak clutch fork that would bend.
My factory clutch started to slip at 212,000 miles so I replaced it. The hydraulics went out a short time later, so I'd recommend just changing out the hydraulics with the clutch, or at least having the kit handy. If you buy the pre-bled system you can do the change out in about 30 min. I've got over 259,000 on my 6 speed with no other issues to date.
A little over 206,000 on my ZF. All but the first 12,000 of that at above stock power levels. Also have four trailers ranging from 1,300 to 11,000 lbs.
I'm on my second clutch.....and it's about time for a third, and the second set of hydraulics, but the tranny itself has had zero issues.
Scott brings up some good additional points. My miles are all stock. I'll be hauling 18,000 lbs about 60 miles this afternoon. Another load of gravel for my driveway.
I have 150k on my 02 ZF-6 with no troubles. I replaced the hydraulics at 80k (bleed through ), the clutch with a LuK at 115k, the hydraulics again at 116k (plastic keeper broke ) I replaced the stock ATF with Mobil 1 Full Synthetic at 90k. But the tranny itself has been a good unit. I've towed all sorts of things from 1k lbs to 18k lbs without any issues.
I guess I'm the "lucky" one. I had a pilot bearing fail and it took out the rear bearing of my ZF6.
It would rumble in neutral, shudder at 1800 rpm, 10% throttle, and the gear shift would rattle in OD of the highway.
Rebuilt exchange tranny and it was back to like new.

I think the previous owner of your truck probably rode her hard and put it up wet. Shorted injectors, blown tranny, busted transfer case, carrier bearing.....that first year was a real PITA for you. Don't know if "unlucky" covers it.
I remember when you were one malfunction away from throwing in the towel.

What sold me on the truck was the fact that it was completly bone stock and owned by a retired gentleman.
But he did tow a 42" King of the Road triple axle 5th wheel with it.

Sometimes you get the bear and sometimes the bear gets you.
