they had a big post about this in the SD section, i put mine in three years ago on my 2004 5.4 f-350 and i tom a 16ft trailer with johndeer tractor with bucket and 8ft backhoe attachment for work and never had a problem. but im very **** about my truck and flush the tranny every 12 to 14months. basically the ball spring in the bypass goes bad and lets the fluid go back to the tranny and not to the cooler. i did it because i dont have $3500 for a new transmission
i am rebuilding trans and thought about deleting the bypass tube.the trans may have up to 350k on it, i have no idea if it's the original or tenth trans, so if it's the original i'm sure the bypass is due to fail if it hasn't already.i'm donig it now so i don't have time to order the kit and was wondering if i could just track down some bushings that would work.
I bought the eliminator kit, then decided against using it after I learned that if the cooler clogged, the rear of the trans would not get any lubrication and destroy itself before you knew there was a problem.
With the bypass installed you will still get proper lubrication in the event of a clog in the cooling system, your temps will go up, and give you a warning that something is wrong before its too late.
My best advice is to just buy a new bypass (IIRC they are around $60 at the dealer) and install a trans temp gauge if you dont already have one.
Your going to pay about half of that for the eliminator kit with shipping anyhow.
Some people have had no problems running without the bypass, but I personally wouldn't risk it. It is there for a reason.
The bypass is nothing more then a spring and ball check valve. The spring rate is high enough to keep the ball seated under normal transmission cooler line pressures. When the circuit pressure rises from a clogged cooler or line blockage, the fluid pressure over powers the spring and fluid will return to the pan un-cooled.
If the bypass valve is open, it most likely has debris holding it open. If you have debris in the fluid, you will most likely have restrictions in the cooler too.
There are rebuild kits for around $10 online for them, just search 4R100 parts and you should come across them.
thanks guys! franko, that is a great idea. i'm also in the middle of building a house and my "common sense" and "mastery of the obvious" has not been working well lately, i'm embarrassed i didn't just think of that. thanks again.

No problem, keep your "common sense mastery of the obvious" on high alert if your buying a home. They are a bit more expensive to fix than our trucks... Good luck to ya.
