Someone told me over some beers once that the chasis are made by Grumman Olson and the powerplants are sourced evenly to the big 3. But you know how conversations over beers can be...
The workhorses have gm gassers. 6.0 in 700s 8.1 in 1000 and 1200
We have some old aerostars left; p30 (300 cube f250 with mini ups body and 4.6). Some older 1000 cube ford chasis with cummins motors. And 24ft with fseries cab all '97 and older
The bulk of the fleet at my building are probably split even between old gas gm's and newer freightliner, internatl, and workhorses. A few oddball likE oshkosh. These are chasis the bodies are grumman morgon olson etc
All the diesels we are getting are the 6.7 cummins, and that's about the last 100 trucks. Very few gm gassers and only on the small trucks. I drive a P12 which is the largest delivery truck and it has the cummins and it's a 2010 on a freightliner chassis. The 24 ft are international. The last 6.0 diesels came in 04 and the have been plagued by problems, and I guess UPS decided to go with the cummins instead.
Mike im still a cover and drive about everything. i like the international 1200s best for space/speed and they have the best suspension dont rock as much as the workhorses.
We got a bunch of workhorse 1200s (146xxx) and they are huge inside 6" wider than the older ones, but the brakEs and suspension are horrible. The 8.1 has nice smooth quite power but im glad i aint paying gas/maintnance.
Like you said our 800s and old 1000s are slowly being replaced with freightliner and workhorse 1000s about 50/50
put a 4bt in it and have fun.
repaint it of course.
i was told by a mechanic for USPS that they are built on a chevy s-10 frame, with a fully aluminum body.
they were designed for a 25 year service life and once that is up they will all most likely be stripped of aluminum, and scrapped.
i'd love to have one though.
you could put a bench seat on either side of the box section and cut a hole in the roof for a sunroof. the possibilities are endless!!
My old gm 1000 was a 81 and i was driving it until about 2008... To be honest it wasstill running ok but the scrapped all the carb motors for some reason?
