I have run on to a 2003 F450. It has a turbo that came apart and damaged engine. Havent seen it yet so I assuming the engine is gone. I understand that to get the heads off the cab has bo be jacked up. What if you remove engine, does it still have to be jacked up. Is there a special procudure for lifting the cab? Truck is $3000 and I figure that I can get a engine for $3000 or less. Should I pass? Havent seen too many F450 for that price. Any one ever have a turbo go bad? Did it ruin the engine, or could heads be removed and repaired?
You do not have to pull the cab to take the heads off.
You do not have to take the cab off to pull the motor.
Thanks powerstroke: Some one has told me wrong. What is a ball park figure I should expect to pay for a engine? What are the chances of this one being repairable?
i just did a project exactly what you are describing. you can pm me if you would like being that i respond faster that way. if you spend 3k on a motor your getting a hell of a deal. cheapest i found one was 4600 that i just got done putting in last week. you can pull the cab. its not hard and i prefer it that way. since you have to pull the motor you can either take the whole front end out and pull it though the front or take the cab off. and if i was you (which i did this) i would go ahead while the new motor was out i would stud it! if you pm me i can give you price breakdowns of what it cost me and all the details about the one i just did
Just an observation but most of the turbo failures I've seen are related to the varible vanes and associated stuff on the exaust side of the turbo and those bits would go out the exhaust pipe. Also if it throws some parts on the pressure (intake) side the FOD would have to travel through the intercooler and several feet of tubing to get back into the engine. Could happen I'm sure but I would do some checkin before buying a repalcement engine.

im wondering if its the oil side of the turbo that he is talking about. or maybe the standpipe melted like what happend to my brothers truck and the turbo made a noise before it shut down which would have led to the PO to think that the turbo failed and caused the motor to blow. this is what happend to me with my bros truck that we redid but ive heard of a turbo blowing up and completely gauling the motor. and being an f450 im sure all it did was tow so im thinkin that the two options that i just stated were prob what happend
Its hard to get any information on deals like this, as the person who is selling the vehicle probably really doesnt own it. If it didnt destroy the block, I have found a couple of fire damage engines for around $800. Its that part of getting it out of the truck (labor) (time) Just trying to get a picture of what I would have in it when done. I would be doing most of the labor myself. A good f450 cab and chassis (not rusted in our area) is really hard to find, and if you do happen to find one it is at top dollar, as no one replaces them unless they have 300,00 miles or so and just worn out. This one is supposed to have 165k. I have a 1997 F350 with the 7.3 with a utility bed on it and love it, but I pull a small dozer and it just seems to be too light. (especially in braking area.) Had a F450 gas at one time and it hadeled it just time. Sold it to get the 7.3 because of the power, and cheaper to run. Thanks for all the suggestions.
right now we bought the truck for 2k and have about 10k total. thats with a new bed that it needed, leather seats that i bought for 1300 and the motor for 4600. then i got the sinister kit for 1400 and a 2 post lift for 3k installed. if the block and pistions and stuff are still good really all your doing is a head gasket job and thats not hard at all.
Motor prices are all over I have seen them picked up for 1500-6k. just gotta shop.
really depends on what and how the turbo failed.
compression test would be a good start, if it started sucking oil it can very quickly melt pistons.
also check the oil filter stand pipe see if its there.
