alternator wiring

hey guys i got a 81 f250, 351m.. i just bought the truck a few months ago. i removed the starter and alternator to be rebuilt. the alternator i guess is a delco remy from a early 70's chev caprice.. they is 2 wires coming off the alternator ( when i bought the truck they were not connected to anything ) theres the main cable that goes to battery postive.. theres another wire thats probably 16 gauge... im wondering were this wire is surpose to go. im guessing its gota go to switched battery power. just wondering if anyone has any ideas of where i could hook this up that is easy to get at.. thanks!!

The alternator should have two small terminals labeled #1 and #2. Make up a small jumper wire with a slide on connector on one end and a large ring connector on the other end, and connect it to terminal 2 and connect the other end on the large stud on the alternator where the battery wire connects.

In your Ford harness over at the Ford regulator, there should be a green/red wire. Disconnect this wire from the Ford regulator, and hook it to terminal #1 on the GM alternator. That should be it.

This is assuming you have a late 70's internally regulated GM alternator.

okay thanks.. maybe its not a 70's gm alternator. it is internally regulated.. there is only 1 stud on it for the main cable to the battery positive. the small wire is in a 4 or 5 pin connector with only 1 wire coming out of it.

Do a search on the internet for GM alternator types or identification to make sure what you have. Just like Ford, they made several types. You could go back to the original Ford alternator, they were ok in those years of your truck. It's around 86 they went to the one that burns up all the time, and I have used late 70's GM alternators in those applications.

Yes, I have done that plenty of times. You can make up or cut a spacer on that bottom bolt so it lines up the belt pulley. But there is one important piece you need to add. If you don't it won't take long for that bottom bolt to break off. You need a flat piece of metal, put it in a vise and bend it and drill holes in each end. You must add more support to that bolt out near the head of the bolt. You look at it and see what place is best to bolt the end to the engine, straighter is better/stronger. And example of what I am talking about is below. Make it out of something fairly thick.

Alternator pulley

So I’m having a issue with the pulley on the alternator it’s a single grove and I need the 2 grove one instead but I don’t wanna deal with returning it so I was thinking of swapping the water pump pulling from a single to a double I believe that will solve my issues what do you think?

You are not running a smog pump, that's the reason for the new bracket? So why do you need a double pulley for the alternator? The other groove was to drive the smog pump.
