I know I am going to sound tarded, but I need some help. I cannot remember what wire goes where on my alternator. I have a 79 f250 with a 460. I can only assume the big old battery wire goes to BATT on the alternator. Other than that I have a red wire and a white wire. Any help to refresh a dumb guys memory as to what post to attach these to would be appreciated.
EDIT: Sorry, Only 20 minutes later.
Hey I know you guys got better things to do than help an amateur, but I really need some help. I do not know if I got this thing hooked up right or not. This morning it was dead so I assumed a battery problem. Battery tested it was good. Alternator tested it was good. Voltage regulator no good and replaced, but still the truck will only start 5 to six times before the darn thing is dead as a doornail again. I am not much of a mechanic but I want to learn. Please help.
I did this last month also on a 78 F250 4x4 w/ a 351M. Needed a new alternator, and I got into the wiring to fix some problems I found. The two other wires go to the spade lugs on the alternator, and from there to the charge controller that should be mounted to the fender well behind the starting solenoid. I'll have to check my notes for polarity on the alternator connections. I remember a red wire, and a white w/ stripe yellow wire.
One thing to look out for: On my 78, the heavy "batt" wire goes from the alternator into the wiring harness, and joins two other heavy wires and a lighter wire to the alternator guage in a crude junction. This heavy wires in this junction connect the alternator, battery (actually batt side of the starting solenoid), and the 12VDC panel under the dash . On mine, the junction was green with corosion and very loose. You might want to dig into the harness a bit to see what yours looks like. It's potentially a weak electrical conection between the alternator and the battery.
