My 2000 Exc V10 2WD started making a screeching, metallic noise when i turned a corner today. The noise was not speed or engine rpm dependent. Not brakes, either, because i coasted in drive and neutral and it persisted, but got more pronounced when i turned the wheel.
I recently had the power steering fluid replaced. Coincidence? Nothing dragging beneath either.
I'm thinking its a wheel bearing or hub assembly. After i filled up with gas, I turned the wheel hard right to pull out of the station and I felt a "slip" in the front wheels. Like the lug nuts on the tires were loose and the wheels shifted under the load.
I'm pretty sure the wheels' lugs are tight (I'll check this am), but jeezopeet... Bad bearings? The truck has only 35,000 miles on her!
That sounds like the hub was never properly torqued. Just jack it up and shake the suspected wheel, you should be able to find it without a complete tear down. If it is the hub I think it would be a good idea to change both, just as a precaution.
Now. PS pump doesn't cause noise. ONly when my front wheels are turning, do I hear the screeching. I guess I'm heading out to O'Reilly (in my wife's car) to buy a set of front bearing assemblies...
My V10 used to do the same thing. I sent it to the dealership when I needed to get new brakes and I guessed they fixed that to because it doesnt do it anymore.
