I have an '86 Ford F150 5.0 and just within the past month I started getting a loud screeching noise when I turn the wheel left or right. The power steering fluid was low so I topped it off but I am still getting the same noise. Any ideas on what else to check out?
It's possible that your power steering pump is going out. I know a couple of buddies that they had to replace their pump when it started doing that...
It does it when you crank the wheel all the way left or right?
I can't think of anything else off the top of my head.
sounds like every other ford power steering pump mine does the same and so does most older fords i come in contact with some people say if it stops whining then you have a problem replace the pump with a saginaw they are much better
Mine does the same thing. It will do it at idle while I'm sitting still when I turn the wheel to the left or the right. I had my dad do it once while I watched the pump and the belt wants to squeal. Any ideas on how to fix it? Do I need a new pump? What is this "Saginaw" pump that everyone is talking about? Will it bolt right in?
I never understood why ford used the saginaw pumps in vans while the trucks got the ford pumps. If your belt is tight and still squeels or has been slipping for a while replace the belt, more than likely its glazed.
Okay. Thanks for the tip fai4g63. I might do that. It's worth a shot anyway. Nonetheless, a new pump is only $35. If I get a sagniaw pump, will I have to ask for one on a van or what? What would be the request on the saginaw?
depending on what motor you have, the easiest thing you can do is find the pump/bracket/hoses from a van that had PS and the same motor, you can just buy a new pump and the other stuff seporate, but then you have to go through the hassle of putting the pulley onto the pump (MAJOR PITA, bad juju) this way you end up with a strong PS pump anyways, especially if you are running bigger tires, the Saginaw is almost a must.
Thanks Stokes. My truck has the 300 I6. Did some Ford vans from the 80's come with this same engine? I don't really know if there are any vans in the yards around here. I'll have to call around and check. If I had to buy a new standard Ford pump, will it still do the squealing thing that it does now?

yep, lots of vans Around with the big6, if you cannot find anything, i could probly sell you one, i have an extra setup from a 87van, you might be able to just slap a V-belt pulley on it and call it good. otherwise, interested in just converting your system to a serantine belt? lol theres a way to get rid of the anoying belt sqeak for good.
What are you asking for the system that you have from the 1987 Van?
