thanks for stoppin in and helpin me out on this one i have 2000 explorer 4x4 that the rear end seams like it kinda locks up at turns only??it makes the front of the truck kinda feel like its wheels are gonna cave in at turns only??what gives i thought maybe ball joints or axles in the front are gone but a mechanic checked it out and saidm something about rear lock up etc...can any body give me info on what i can do without spending a ton of money on her???the switch on dash has auto hi and lo would this make it a awd???any info is gladly appreciated thank you ...

That would make it a ContolTrac, the transfer case is by defect in 2 wheel drive, when the controller senses slippage (differential between the front and rear tires), an electro mechanical clutch in the T/C activates, providing power to the front wheels (feels chunky on dry pavement, especially on turns). When the slippage is rectified the front power is deactivated, making it "Automatic".
If the front and rear tires are not equal in diameter the T/C will activate.
There are 2 hall sensors in the T/C which pick up metallic dust, causing them to malfunction. Drain the T/C (remove the fill plug first), remove and clean the Hall sensors, inspect for cracking (replace if defective), refill with clean ATF... Philip
thanks for the input on this one im gonna get dirty this weekend with her im gonna check the tires make sure there all the same size i know that there mis match tires and the front seem a little worn im gonna check u joints too cause i do also hear a clank from drive to reverse also and check those sensors you mentioned on the t/c i will keep u informed and thanks again for your input its gladly appreciated
