I broke my door panel and am going to replace it so i took it off and realized that it would be nice to have speakers in the doors. BUT there are no holes for wire. Has any one ever drilled for speakers? or should i just stay with the speakers that i have 1978 F150 custom
Yes I have drilled for wires several times. Just wrap it real good with tape where it goes through the hole so it wont rub. I like to wrap it thick enough that I have to jam the taped portion into the drilled hole, that way it will stay put.
Drill the hole thru the edge of the door and thru the door jamb at about the same level. I used an 8" peice of vacuum hose with a grommet slipped on each end to make a "boot" for the wire to pass thru. Drill the holes the right size for your grommets and have the inner hole in the grommet fit tight on the vacuum hose. Mine work great!!!! And 6 1/2 " speakers fit the factory speaker holes in the doors perfectly. You may have to drill different holes for the screws to mount the speakers but thats it.
Quite often if I have the room I will just poke a hole thru the metal with a sharp awl or something, that way there are no sharp edges for the wire to rub on, usually flares it out quite nicely.. Might use a daub of silcone to hold the wire if needed.. Plus this method works much better than drilling if you need to make holes for screws, a lot more metal for the screw to hold onto...
Do you happen to have any shots of where the wire and conduit enters the cab. I am new to this and am kind of stumped as to hide the wire. Thanks again for replying to the questions this site is great!
There are little "indentions" in the door and on the cab where the factory would have put the holes. At least on the ones I've done. I second the tape or something to protect the wire, I've had more than one short out on me from that.
As Buck said, there are dimples in the cab that can be used for this. I took my doors off for easier drill access. Whatever you use to protect the wiring, I also recommend installing grommets in each hole. Once I had the conduit set up, I snaked the wires down from the hole in the door jamb to behind the dash using a coat hanger.
I posted pics a while ago, if you can find them, but I was actually able to run door speakers in my 78 just by drilling holes in the doors. there is a way you can route the wires through existing holes up through into the cab if you are careful enough.
Behind the dash on each side, there is a rubber grommet about 1 1/2" in diameter. The wires for the door dome light switches run thru them. But you still have to drill a hole in the door jamb to get wiring run. Then you can run the wire up thru the 1 1/2" grommets to get it into the cab and behind the dash.............
