Hello,
I have a 2010 XLT S Crew with stock speakers. I wanted to upgrade the speakers on the doors only (4). If anyone has replaced the stocks, how does the aftermarkets sound? I am not interested in adding an amplifier or boom box, just the four speakers. Please let me know how you like your new speakers. I find that the stock speakers are quite poor.
Infinity Reference are probably a great choice. They have a nice cloth dome tweeter thats detailed yet not overly bright and they are efficient which is good for stock power.
I have a set of JL Audio, 2-way speakers that are a direct bolt in and they are pretty nice. A big improvement over the stock. There are more choices, and you can spend a lot of money. I will probably look into "plate" speaker next time around.
The big problem with just replacing the speakers is that the factoy head units rarely have enough power to properly push aftermarket speakers which will cause distortion. Distortion will blow out a speaker quicker than clean power which is where a good amp comes in. If you just want speakers then you need to find out what the output is of the factory head unit and then look for speakers that fall in that range. If the minimum input for a speaker is say 30 and the head unit only puts out 10 max then it is just a waste of money. Fortunatly newer cars have better head units then they used to but it still might not be adequate for many aftermarket speakers.
The Ford oem HU puts out enough to push the JL and Infinitys nicely without distortion.
Do you know what the output is for the factoy unit because like the rest I agree that the factory system is lacking but I am not going to put money into speakers that are not going to give the best return if the head unit is not going to power them properly. The lowest rms I see is 35 and most have 60-80. Most older factory head units put out 10-20 but I know times change so if there is a way to find out exactly what the factoy unit puts out it would be nice.
I don't have the head unit's rated power, but I can tell you at almost full volume there is no distortion. I would guess 18-25 watts. If you don't distort the the speakers-no matter the power-10 or 1000- you will be fine.
I appreciate the help. I checked Best Buy and heard the pioneers, I wasn't impressed by it. I heard a 6 x 9 sony which sounded much better than the 6 x 8s. If the 6 x 9 would fit, I would have replaced it today ... but now will wait a bit to see if I can live with the stock set for a while.
