I own a Automatic 1999 F250 7.3 4x4. Over the past 2 weeks while driving down the road I noticed when I'm cruising along in 4th gear and i hit a bump, it downshifts my trans. Sometimes it kicks right back into 4th, other times it will stay downshifted for a certain amount of time with the RPM's around 2500 or more. I figured it was a lose connector, so i took off the connector on the top and side of the trans a put some contact gel on the connector hoping that would work. Well it still does it and I'm not sure what the issue is. The truck shifts fine from a stopped position and all that, It's just when I'm in 4th and hit a bump it downshifts on me... What could be the problem?
You might want to look at the wires coming from the OD off button on the end of the shifter to see if one is chafted and grounding when you hit a bump.
I unplugged the VSS connector and all seemed fine.. I don't have any more contact gel left so i couldn't put any of that on.. I plugged it back in and took it for a spin and it still downshifted over bigger bumps... I'll try looking at the wires on the OD button but I'm not sure that is it.. It seems to do it when the back axle hits the bump...It's hard to explain but just picture several decent size bumps ( potholes ) in a row.. I can literally watch the RPM needle bounce back and forth over each bump as if it kept going from 4th to 3rd... Any other possibilities let me know!
I have a TS performance chip, Cold air intake, exhaust, etc.... Could the chip be loose?? and when i hit a bump it moves and causes it to shift? i just thought of that
It's a 6 position change on the fly.. There is a "stock" position.. would that be sufficient enough to see if that's the problem or should i go underneath and unplug the whole thing? I would think just putting it in the "stock" position would work
I tried turning the Chip to the stock position and it still did it.. Darn i have no clue what it could be..I'll try taking the chip out if nothing else works.. I can't right now cause of the weather.. I was hoping someone else had this same issue and new what the fix was..
