Anyone have any good brand suggestions for replacement ball joints? I know alot of the offroad guys really like moog brand steering stuff so that what I was thinkling of going with. Any other suggestions?
Just got back from les schwab, I had them check out all the steering stuff on my truck and they say the ball joints are still good but pretty much all the rest of the steering components need to be replaced, except the pitman arm. They said the steering gear box is ok but it is leaking and would benefit from a replacement. I am going to go with Moog for all the tie rods but what is a good reman'ed steering gear box brand? They also said I would benefit from going to a 16x9 rim with a set of 285/75's as opposed to the 15x8 and 33's that are on there. What a pain! Atleast I don't have to do ball joints now. I was also thinking my front shocks might be done for but they said those are good too.
Take it somewhere else. Just because the gearbox is leaking, does NOT mean you need to replace it. Seals are available for it, and are easily installed. If it is mechanically damaged, than TRW makes quality parts
As far as the rim goes, tell em to shove it up their ***! rim and tire size is your choice. Yes smaller tires will be easier on the steering, but trying to sell you a rim/tire package is just them trying to take your money.
They weren't trying to sell me new rims they were just suggesting. I was planning on taking it to a couple of other shops around town and seeing what they say as well.
Amazon has pretty good prices on moog stuff. To replace all my tie rods will be about $230. Compared to buying the same parts through checkers for over $300!
Are the steering gear boxes the cause of the loose steering feeling in these trucks?
I used Motorcraft joints when I replaced the ball joints and tie rods. I checked on pricing for redhead a few months ago and they were pretty reasonable. Just shoot them an email and tell them what you've got.
