Replaced both front calipers, hoses, master cylinder, rear hose, cylinders and shoes. Drove for about 150 miles and right front brake start dragging to the point of smoking. Left front seems to be ok. Don't understand what may be going on. Differential valve? Random bad reman caliper? Pretty disappointed after all my work and dont get what changed after a week and a half and 150 miles Any tips appreciated.
Really? On top of that they were NOS reman motocraft units from rock auto. I got it unstuck but not sure I want to use it again. Should I just replace it?
Well at least you didn't use autozone parts. they're famous for failure. I think I would replace it, just to be safe.Maybe talk to rock auto and see what they can do for replacement. You might try rebuilding it too, they're not to hard, kinda like doing a master cylinder.
I've rebuilt them before. First time I've ever had a new caliper stick like that though which made me think I had bigger problems. Gonna pull it apart here shortly and see WTF went wrong
Does it have plastic or steel pistons? There were lots of problems when ford first came out with those plastic pistons. IIRC, the clearance was a little tight and the piston would swell a little causing it to stick. Not all the plastic pistons have that problem, but since you got NOS maybe yours do. I've had pretty good luck with Autozone parts. I'll admit they have a higher failure rate, but the price and warranty are hard to beat. NAPA, for example, requires a receipt for warranty parts where AZ you just give them your phone # and its in their system nationwide.
The motorcraft Parts were real old looking ones from rock auto. Had steel pistons i think buts that's interesting point about the swelling and makes sense. Were all f series made with these phenolic pistons or are they mixed?
i had this problem a few months ago when i was driving the truck the power booster was not returning all the way keeping the front brakes draging i bought new hoses calipers rotors master cylinder an booster then the engine craped out on me
bashby hit the nail on the head. The NOS Motorcraft calipers I bought had the phenolic pistons in them. When I pilled the piston out it had a scored ring around where it had swollen and seized. I plan to by some metal pistons and replace the phenolic ones as soon as possible. Replaced with a A-1 Cardone reman (with phenolic piston) temporarily to get her running again.
I guess the NOS motorcrafts were real old and probably were the ones bashby referrred to....thanks for the help. we are rolling again.
