Guys,
I just bought a 2011 F150 CC 5.0 3.55 axle 4x2 Lariat. Beautiful truck. My question the transmision temp is running 195- 197deg(digital read out) while driving on the Interstate 70-75 mph(no trailor or load). This is alot higher than the 03'F250 I just traded in(165-170). Is this what everyone is seeing? Also got 18.5 mpg on the first tank, driving 70-75mph down the Interstate.
I don't know what they have done with these transmissions. I left Ford in February, 2007. These transmissions were just in the discussion stage.
One thing that we were talking about was running the transmissions at higher temperatures. It helps efficiency, which means increased fuel economy. Remember those charts that float around the internet showing the reduced transmission life with higher temperatures? They are flat out lies. The only grain of truth to those charts is that it is about right if you are using 1960's materials and ATF. Modern transmissions can run hundreds of thousands of miles over 200°F with no degradation at all.
Also be aware that Ford says the transmission fluid is "lifetime" so no need to change - unless you are doing the "severe duty" in which case they say to change at 150k miles.
Hard to believe, but it backs up what Mark is saying above.
Thanks Mark and everyone else. That puts my mine at ease. It is a great truck so far, but will be hard pressed to be better than F250 7.3 that i got rid of for this one.
