Freakin oil cooler!?!?!?

Well I have exactly 1500 miles on my new oil cooler and the delta is already starting to climb! I changed the oil cooler about a month ago and the temps were great until last Sunday. I made a 600 mile round trip to pick up a 1990 F350 and snow plow. On the way up I pulled an empty goose neck trailer, on the way back the trailer was loaded with the F350 and plow. The deltas on the way up were a little higher than normal but never got over 20 degrees. On the way back the deltas would reach 30 degrees but I attributed this to towing a pretty heavy load at speeds of 70-75 mph.

So this evening is the first time I've drove the truck since the trip last Sunday. I drove it for about 45 minutes tonight and the ECT ranged from 188.6 to 195.0, staying most of the time between 190.4 and 192.2. The EOT got up to 211.3 at one point but stayed most of the time between 207 and 209. This was normal driving at speeds of 60 and under. There was some hills but nothing major, just regular putting around.

From the time I changed my oil cooler until last Sunday's towing trip, the highest delta I saw was 9 degrees and that was at 80mph on the interstate. Just normal driving they ranged from 3-5 degrees.

About a month before I changed the oil cooler, I did a really good flush using Restore and then Restore Plus. The only thing I can figure is that working it hard while towing broke loose some of the crap that was still in the system from the Ford Gold crap coolant. What do you guys think?

I know this, if my cooler is already clogging, and I'd say it is cause I don't know what else would cause these deltas tonight, I'm gonna start saving for a BPD air/oil cooler and be done with this crap once and for all!

Did you check your coolant filter to see if it was plugged? After all the flushes then changing my oil cooler, the filter plugged at least twice within 2,000 miles. Since then I have put 100K on it and changing the coolant filter tomorrow just because. EOT/ECT still 7-9 degree differential.

Unfortunately I haven't installed a coolant filter yet. That was gonna be my next step. My thinking was that since I did a good chemical flush and switched to ELC coolant, I wouldn't need one in a hurry. Guess that was a stupid idea. I guess I'll go ahead and install a coolant filter and see how long the temps hold out. I'm not gonna worry too much unless the EOT gets to 230. I'm still seriously considering saving up the 1800 bucks for a BPD oil cooler.

Did you do the work yourself? Ford part would still be under warranty.

I had mine done at Ford 2 year parts and labor...

I gained that talent cause I couldn't afford to pay to have it done! LOL. The service manager at this local dealer is a good friend of mine so I hope he can make sure the part gets warrantied for me. I sure don't look forward to doing all that damn work again!!! LOL

Since the oil cooler is that new, you might try back flushing the system to see if you get anything out. It might save you from replacing it.

It is possible that the cooler bypass valve is weak and not allowing all the oil to go through the cooler. It's alot easier to change the valve than a cooler.

I've thought about that. Thats where you flush through the oil cooler supply port housing isn't it?
