does new FICM need programed?

Hello all. I have an '03 crew, dually, F-350, 2 wheel, 6.0 PS. The guy i use to troubleshoot my truck says it needs a new FICM. My question is does that need to be programed for my truck, or can I just buy a new one from wherever I can get it and plug up and go. He is telling me $800, and i have found some for around $450, new. If it does have to be programed in some way where is the best place for that. By the way this site is awesome. I used the test procedure you all described for testing the ficm and thought it was bad, but not being the truck geniuse, he confirmed.
thanks in advance

Depends where you get it. If from ford yes! I bought one from Swamps and it comes preprogrammed (or flashed). My research has found that buying from ford = $1200, by the time you buy the FICM and have it flashed. About $350-$400, if you find a reputable shop that rebuilds them and puts the latest flash in for you! Keep in mind, LOOK for a reputable shop, research is key!

If it's brand new in box from Ford or else ware yes it need to be programed. If you pick one up at a salvage yard (IF YOU GET A GOOD ONE) the truck will run but might not be up to date with flashes. I have a friend that got me one for nothing at a salvage yard I hooked it up and truck ran fine but I don't know what flash is has. I just keep it for a spare.
