I ordered a new FX 4 and see it comes with a locker rear axle. I have had 7 FX4s in the past always ordered the optional limited slip in the past a couple hundered bucks xtra. What is the difference in this new 1 and how come they change it for 2011? What are the pros and cons of this axle for offroad and highway use?

The cons are it is an open diff. in 2wd. I ordered mine last week so I won't have it for another 5-7 weeks.I'm looking into eliminating the E-locker and putting a Truetrac L/S in it.I'm not even sure if it can be done.
No cons really, pro is you can select when you want it on. Its basically an instant on/off so if you're already stuck you can flip it on.
Its a big advantage over a limited slip in the snow and ice, since it won't try to fishtail all over the place. I do have the limited slip in mine, even though I have winter for 9 months a year, I also run studded snows so the problem isn't apparent.
I use 2wd about 90% of the time and I just don't like the idea of it being an open diff. in 2wd because the locker only works in 4wd.
Unlike the locker in the Raptor which can be used in 2wd or 4wd.
yeah, from what my brother says who has a FX4, he hates it in 2wd because of the open diff, the wheels spin alot even in just rain/wet roads, let alone a little bit of snow.
The locker is really a better option than the L/S. The 2 things I don't like about is it is only lockable in 4x4 mode and it cuts out above 25 mph.
Those 2 cons cancel out any pros I can think of about the E-locker.
But I had to have an FX4 and you have no other option but an E-locker in an FX4, so now I gotta fix this issue.

Only like 99% of vehicles on the road have open differentials....
I suppose your brother is so smart he turns the traction control off too? Apparently he's so smart he has to apply full throttle everywhere he goes too?

Hey brother, I'll take the E-locker carrier off your hands when you swap it out. I have plan for a 9.75 swap into my old 78 F150 and this would work great for what I want to do. Drop me a line if you do the swap and we can talk $$. This project will happen a few years from now so I can be on your time line.
The locker is real nice in the snow, I like it better then a full LS. And even though the locker dis-engages above 25mph, at that speed the truck has momentum to minimize the chance of getting stuck. The locker kicks back in at 20 mph if slipping starts and speeds slow down anyway.
When they make the E-locker an LSD when not locked, with manual locking in 2wd, i will take notice. But I really don't like the open diff in 2wd mode. I am in 2wd at least 95% of the time, LSD is just better for me.
Even when not locked, the open diff acts like a LS because of the traction control... A locker is always preferable to a LS in off road applications. True, I'd like to engage it in 2wd as well, but if I am going anywhere that requires a locker, then I'll probably be in 4wd too. The only time I'd like it locked in 2wd is when I want to light up the tires from time to time.
