A Block with no casting #?

So in response to a recent thread I checked for a casting code on a block I'm currently using and was surprised to find that there is no casting number where there should be. It has a date code (sept. 69) and 352 in the front but no casting number on the other side. Has anyone ever seen a block like this and specifically do you know why it doesn't have the number?

because Ford is weird.

I've got a C4AE -A block with no 352, no date code, no nothing other than C4AE. It's standard 4.050 with webbed mains, and super thick walls.

best of luck,
Drew

I would've said a either a lousy QA or one individual with enough foresight to see people like us care about such things to pull a sick joke . Consider your joke noted sir...whom ever you are .

Are you inspecting a completely CLEAN block? Because when I looked for it on my 390, even though it had been totally rebuilt (by me), the code was still obscured by some rust.

I know with mine it's totally clean. Well clean as simple green, wire brushes, and oven easy off will get. Say barring a hot tank I'd eat off this engine. (Figuratively)

Oh yeah it's completely clean. Hot tanked, painted, then assembled. It's just not there. It doesn't really matter I know. That's why I didn't even check it when I picked it. lol I just measure bore, check main webbing, and do a drill bit test. That tells me all I need to know. I was just a little shocked when I went to take a pic for frostedto and there was nothing there!
If anyone has seen one before chime on in.

Weird, never heard of that happening before. I agree it was probably just a guy with a hang over at the foundry Too bad it wasnt some special performance prototype block or something, but chances are you would have noticed in your measurments. How lucky would that have been huh?

I have a block just like the one you are working on. We're you able to find any information?

There is no engineering number on a block, just a casting number. A block cast in September 1969 would have been installed in a 1970.

Casting numbers are foundry marks, cannot be cross referenced to Ford part numbers.

OK, can you please elaborate on this because I'm to understand that "C8ME-A" for example is what would be called the engineering code for that block casting. 9J5 in my case is the date it was actually cast for my 1970 truck. Why are there blocks here and there without that C8ME or whatever C6 C4 etc. casting in it?

C8ME-A is the block casting number, could also be C8ME-6015-A .. Engineering numbers will not be found on blocks, heads, bell housings etc.

Engineering numbers can be crossed over to Ford part numbers, but casting numbers cannot.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the clarification. I appreciate it. I worked at the Cummins Engine plant in Indiana for 23 years and several of those were in block machining early on. Back then, we got our block castings from just a few streets away at the Golden Foundry. I'm familiar with what kind of oddities occur behind the scenes lol, I've got a few stories. We a had whole dept dedicated to block salvage and I remember the man that ran that shop had hired on in 1959.
