Hi I have a 1978 ford short bed 4x4 has a 400 in it and can't tell how much of the truck is stock can't decode the vin# any where it is E14BRCC8332 That is on a plate on the door jam not the door not one there but my frame also has it stamped in it as well in the right spot so can any one help me?
First question, are you SURE thats an E and not an F at the beginning?
Here's how the VIN number decodes
E14= E150 Econoline cargo van
B= 300 cu in 1bbl 6 cylinder engine
R=San Jose Assy. Plant
CC8332=1978 sequential serial number
Change the E to an F
F14=F150 4WD pickup
For the truck to have come from the factory with a 400 cu in V8 the fourth digit in the VIN would be "S"
So your VIN would read F14SRCC8332
no my vin starts with a E on the title and on the cab on the vin plate it says state of texas relocation vin plate and I do know the engin code but the plate under the hood makse my truck out as a F10GRE3557 witch makes it something totaly diferant I know alot about these trucks and I know the cab and front clip on my truck ain't from it the emblems are F250 and it is a F150 the motor is ided as a 77 351m/400 block have no idea on crank and the heads are off a 73 in proses of geting the right year heads but my frame location under the bat and the door vin match so I am lost no frame work done for van to truck switch over
It sounds like the state of Texas assigned your truck a new VIN number. If thats the case a VIN decoder or the Ford parts catalog (thats what I use) won't do any good.
You say the frame VIN matches the door plate? That's puzzeling, there has never been an F series truck issued a VIN starting with "E".
Here is the page from the Ford parts catalog that breaks down the series codes. "E" is for Econoline only.

mikeo0o0o0 Thanx for the welcome to I have built alot of these trucks and never saw it eather I am going to clean the frame up better if tomarrow is a better day seeing as I do all this with no garage lol all in the dirt other then that my next project is to turn my 78 superclub into a 4x4 half ton style.....
Well I got my top end together and new timing chain set along with new heads off a 75 block on my 77 block in my 78 lol but back to that Vin number thing I wire wheeled the frame today and it dose start with an E but llooks as if the frame had the old vin # ground awayand the new one stamped into place I been looking into it seems to be a salvaged title I think from Texas but it transferedx to another state shouldn't the salvage claim transfer with it?
but it transferedx to another state shouldn't the salvage claim transfer with it?
Not necessarily, thats an old used car dealer trick. Transfer the salvage title to a state that doesn't acknowledge rebuilt, salvage, totaled titles. It then is a "clean" title and the vehicle is worth much more.
Thats they way it used to be, things are changing and it is becoming much more difficult to "wash" titles from state to state.
No I live in Arizona have for over 20 + years and we accnoledge salvaged titles I have goten a few myself easy task full safty check and everything must work and properly repaired or replaced to meet OEM safty lines after that it appears on the title as a Salvaged Vehicle just title stays as normal looking just says it in words on it
i noticed you said your 78 is a bit frankenstiened. i had to laugh as mine is as well, its a 73,74,76,78,79 all wrapped up in one. and thats just the parts that i have identified. sorry about the off thread post but it did make me laugh. Also welcome to FTE.
