Is there some where I can get a vin plate made up for my 56. I have a good title but can't find the vin plate and I have it sold but the guy buying it is afraid of it not have the vin plate because he is from a different state. So....I need to get a vin plate made up preferrably one that looks like the original. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ward
If you have the good title, in your name, you can have one stamped by Mid-Fifty. It'll cost you around $100.00, but it will be a new tag, just like the original. Otherwise, assure the buyer that the frame stamped vin is far more important the one attached to the cab. As long as the frame on eis in place, it will pass inspection in all 50 states.
I don't know about other states but if he has a good title to the truck wouldn't there be no need to have it inspected for the vin data plate?? just my thoughts, I know in Utah (redneck ville ) as long as you have a title they dont care, and if you don't have a title pay the $6 app fee and have a policeman/woman come check vin # so as long as you have it either on the frame ( as WMJoe says) or other location you should be good to go?
Hope that helps,
Also Like WMJoe said about getting a data plate stamped, I though I also saw somewere you could buy a blank data plate and stamp it yourself with the # from off the title?? maybe I was dreaming again I'll see if I can find that somwhere
You can buy the blanck vin plate from most resto parts suppliers. As to the title thing, most states (you'll have to check your states laws), will require a vin inspect for out of state titles. That's not too much of a hassle, as long as you have all the appropriate bills of sale, and title paperwork in order. again, if it's on the frame that matches the title, most DOT/DMV facilities understand that changing a cab was very common, and the title is more important to the frame, then the body. This mostly applies to older vehicles, and is not true for any post '81 cars or trucks where they changed to the 17 digit vin system, as all numbers need to match for the newer ones. I just visited DMV for my Big Job, and all they cared about, was that I had a bill of sale for the vin I wanted to use. They will be voiding the '73 L-8000 vin, and title, and using the '54 vin I have, and reassigning the title with the 54 vin.
OK, where on the frame is the vin # stamped for a 56. I looked all over both sides from where the cowl is forward and can't seem to find it. It has a Fatman frontend in it now, I'm hoping that the springhats didn't cover it up.
It probably did. Or, when the installer cleaned to paint the frame, they probably ground over the vin. It is normally stamped anywhere from the front cab mount to the radiator crossmember, on the passenger side frame rail, and on extremely rare cases, it's been found on the drivers rail. I've only heard of that happening once, and we think it was done in error.
I think for a sale, you just need the VIN inspection which is stamped on the frame or radiator cross member, (as it is on my '53). Seems like the DMV will do an inspection and verify this. Give your DMV a call and see exactly what needs to be done for change of ownership.
If you need a data tag/plate those can be made. You need a special stamp set to legally stamp a tag, as they are reverse stamped....a stamp set from Harbor Freight wouldn't work. F-100 vendors can do it, but are a little spendy and the turn around is weeks to months out. I went through this a year or two ago. I went with this place:
I mailed him the information he needed and I got it back in about a week. Also, he was much cheaper. I think I only paid around $60 or so. It is stamped on an original Ford plate as well. Give him a call. Good Luck!
Most of the 56's that I have seen have the VIN stamped on the right frame rail near the radiator crossmember. To be exact, it's right between the inner edge of the frame rail and the second/third rivets of the crossmember. I don't know about KY but here in SoCal all they care about is the number...I have used the HF stamps to put the number on the frame that matches the title. If you really want to get picky you can buy the "star" stamp from McMaster Carr and put the stars before and after the number stamping.
LMC trucks has a vin plate that you can stamp for a 48-52 truck, About $7 not sure if they are the same for a 53-56 data/vin plate but can't imagine anyone in DMV knowing the difference??
Just checked out that supplier, McMaster Carr. I think I'm gonna get me a full set of embossing stamps. Then, I'll stamp my own vin tags.....bwahhabwahhahahaha. $80 for the complete set of 0-9, and A-Z, and the & symbol. The "Star" is also available there, not too bad on the price. Who knows, maybe I'll do vin plate stamping as a side job. Charge an affordable price, get the customer to send a verification package, that they own the vehicle, and get a selection of vin tags. No sweat.
