An easy way to set the compression stroke is with a compression gauge. Hook it into your #1 cylinder and turn the motor over. It takes a few revolutions to time the motor to stop in the correct position, but in this manner you can get it "close enough" and then turn the motor via crankshaft bolt to line up your timing marks.
don't have a gauge...can I just turn the engine until the rotor is at no 1 then pull the dist. and rotate the motor one more time and put it back in. If I'm 180 deg out that would fix it right?

Yes, that will work. I would not trust the rotor being at number one, you should use the timing mark on the harmonic balancer and rotate until it is at 0 BTDC.
got it started....180 deg out of time....still shifts funny...1st to 2nd takes awhile. Changing the TPS seemed to help but not completely fix. Just bought the truck and when I test drove it it didn't do it but slipped a tad bit while in OD. I brought fluid level up because it was low and that fixed slippage in OD but now has long shifts from 1st to 2nd. Have to check some things and make adjustments. Do I need nad alignment tool to adjust the MLPS? Oh..engine light now on...have to check to see what code...Thanx all
