Thread search produced no hits on this issue, so I'll post. A couple hours ago I was driving the '65 f100 when the steering (original non power) went clunk, and suddenly I had about a half of a steering wheel's rotation of slop and a clunking feedback through the wheel. I haven't even crawled up under there, waiting for daylight on a saturday to see the bad news. Any advice on quickly diagnosing this one would be appreciated. I'd like to stay stock on the old gal, as scary as it is...
Yeah worm gear sounds most likely, Mine did that about 6 months after I got it, but not quite that much play. It turned out it was bad spring shackles and bushing. It was allowing the leaves to shift from side to side as I turned the wheel, and each time I changed direction, I got a big thump. I Replaced them for about 40 bucks, and adjusted the steering gear box and was good to go. I also lubed everything again while under there... Speaking of which... when was the last time you lube the steering gear box? I do mine about every 3 months. For the first year I had the truck , I didn't know you could lube the steering gear box...
Thanks for the reply gents. My first impression was rag joint failure, not that I've ever experienced that type of failure..... I'll report my findings.
Are there zerk fittings on the steering box? I'll have to look for them.
The 1964 ford truck manual CHP-496401, said to remove the fill cap on the front/top of the steering box, which is just about the same size as the nozzle on a grease gun approximately 1/2 in diameter, and also remove the bolt on the left side of the steering box that faces the engine block the lowest one. With the steering wheel turned full to the left, pump in grease into the fill opening, until it starts to flow out the bolt hole at the bottom. the part number of the suggested lube is C3AZ-19578-A Or Rotunda R157-A I was lucky enough to find some at the local Napa, and it is a grease. The exception to this is on 4wheel Drives, which call for Hypoid gear oil. An online search shows the C3AZ-19578-A as being obsolete, suggested is any high quality non graphite bearing lube!
